Definition:
• What is Energy?

• Energy is defined as the capacity of doing work.

SI unit for Energy is joules of J.

What is work done?

Work done = Force x displacement

Definition:
• What is Work done?
Work is said to be done ,when applied force brings about displacement.

Work done = Force x Displacement.

SI unit for Work is joules of J.

What is work done?

Work done = Force x displacement

• Let us learn more on types of Energy:

• Kinetic Energy.
• Potential Energy

What is work done?

Work done = Force x displacement

Observe the following pictures:
Bowler is holding the ball

Bowler throws the ball in the direction towards wickets with force

Applied force displaces

the stumps and work is
being done
What did we observe?

Energy is required to do work.

Work done with applied force produces displacement

Energy is needed to displace the body

In this case energy was Kinetic Energy as it was energy
possessed by virtue of motion of object(ball)
Let’s understand more on Kinetic Energy?
Suppose if the ball of mass (m)is moving
through distance “s” with velocity “v”

The ball will possess energy, Which has to

s
be Kinetic Energy(KE) as it is in motion.

To stop the ball the boy will need to apply

force and this force has to equal to KE of
the ball to stop it.

If the ball stops then work is done, opposing

the motion. If the boy applied force “F”
Kinetic Energy=work done(By applied Force)

KE = Force x displacement
= m x a x s -----------(Equation-1)

[By Newtons 2nd Law, Force = mass (m)x acceleration(a)]

To calculate distance ‘s’ ,use equation of motion.
According to the third equation of motion:
v2 = u2 + 2as
[where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, a is acceleration and s is displacement]

Substituting the values:

0 = v2 + 2 as [initial velocity is v m/s, ball stops so final velocity = 0 m/s]
0 = v2 +2(-a)s [acceleration is negative as ball stops so a is negative]
2as = v2
s = v2/2a [substituting the value in equation (1)]
Equation(1) is,
KE = Force x displacement
𝑚 × 𝑎 × 𝑣2
=
2𝑎

𝑚 × 𝑣2
=

The Energy possessed by a body by virtue of its state
of motion is called as Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy depends on mass as well as velocity of
the object.

Mass Kinetic Energy

Kinetic Energy
Velocity
Types of Kinetic Energy
Translational Kinetic Energy Energy possessed by object moving in
straight path.
Rotational Kinetic Energy Energy possessed by object rotating
around axis
Vibrational Kinetic Energy Energy possessed by object due to
vibration that is to and fro motion.

Note: Sometimes object may possess two types of energy.
