Chapter 1: Introduction to Engineering

Technology

Saidatul Radhiah binti Ghazali

Faculty of Engineering Technology (Chemical)
Definition of Engineering Technology

 Engineering Technology is the profession in which a

knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences gained
by higher education, experience, and practice is
devoted primarily to the implementation and extension
of existing technology for the benefit of humanity.
 Engineering Technology Education focuses primarily on the
applied aspects of science and engineering aimed at
preparing graduates for practice in that portion of the
technological spectrum closest to product improvement,
industrial processes, and operational functions.
Engineering Technology Council, 1992
Difference between Engineering &
Engineering Technology
Engineering Technology Engineering
An engineering technology (ET) graduate is An engineering graduate is an innovator.
an implementer.
Emphasis of curriculum on practical Emphasis of curriculum on theory and
application design

Less math intensive More math intensive

Higher concentration of lab work Lower concentration of lab work

New graduates would most likely enter New graduates would most likely aspire to
industry in construction, product design, an entry-level position in conceptual
development, testing, technical design, systems engineering, product
operations, or technical services and research or development.
sales.
More likely to get a 'hands-on' laboratory, More likely to get a research, development,
testing, construction, or in-the-field job. or design job.
Question

 State 4 differences between Engineering Technology and

Engineering
 What the differences between Engineering and Engineering
Technology in testing and evaluation?
 Identify the following either ET or E?

Research on safe nuclear Development of new products

power
Plant operation and production Development of existing
products
Technical analysis on costing Automation production
Product installation Complex design of satellites
History Of Engineering Technology
-The Great Wall of China was built by those
who learned by try and error -Algebra &
Trigonometry
- 21196.18km length, 6-7 meters height
-2700 years old
-More than 1 Million laborers for construction
-Span across 15 regions in north China

-The Egyption Pyramid of Giza

(4500 years ago in Egypt)
-Well developed system of
Mathematics and science
-5-10 tonnes of stones per piece
was laid one by one on top of each
other without crane and forklift

Engineering Engineering
5 Main
Branches
(1700-
Present)

Chemical Mining and

Engineering Metallurgical
Civil Engineering
Engineer:
-Understand soil consistency to
design and build foundation
-Familiar with many type of
construction materials capability
and limitation
-High level of responsibility

Technologist:
-Modernizing present
infrastructure
-building new system to clean
and maintain our environment
-developing more efficient
power delivery system
Mechanical Engineering
Engineer:
-steam power 1800s brought for
mechanical engineer
-machine tooling and
manufacturing development
-automated industries are
largely the result of the early
effort of mechanical engineer

Technologist:
-understand energy transfer and
energy conversion devices
-example in air craft: improved
materials must be used to build
faster, more efficient, safer
Mining And Metallurgical
Engineering
Engineer:
-1800s -evolution of coal to heat
homes and fuel factories , current
petroleum exploration/refining
-Mining extract minerals safely
and efficiently – coal,gemstone,
limestone
-Metallurgical extract metal
yielding minerals –alloy, iron
Technologist:
-New ways must be found to
protect environment
-Material technology will bring
important new materials to our
homes, business and industries
-New uses for ceramic and
polymer, synthesis new material
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
Engineer:
-concerned with production &
distribution of electrical energy
(power plants & power lines)

Technologist:
-earliest technologist was
invented the automobile self
starter
-one of the largest employers of
engineer today
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Engineer:
-1800s, need for mass produced
chemicals
-chemical engineer controls the
chemical processes that convert
raw materials into useful
commodities

Technologist:
-efficient production of
pharmaceuticals
-improved testing of food
products
-new energy system example
solar energy which is clean, safe
and cheap
