Welcome to this unit of study. This unit guide provides important information and should

Unit description
The Research Project unit of study is an individual program of supervised research in which the student,
in consultation with the project supervisor, designs, conducts and disseminates the outcomes of a specific
project. Research placements enable students to undertake a structured work experience program as an
integral part of their degree course. Gaining practical experience in their chosen field enables students to
test interest and ability in these areas.
Throughout this Unit of Study, students will experience a high level of one-on-one mentorship between
themselves and their project supervisor that is focused on the development of the student as a junior
researcher - this may include, but is not limited to: development of the research question/hypothesis,
awareness of safe and ethical laboratory conduct, practical laboratory skills specific to the research
project, collection and interpretation of data, construction of a detailed project report and dissemination of
the research to a scientific audience.
In addition to discipline knowledge, skills and their application, the study of this unit is intended to
contribute to students developing the capabilities needed to be:

This Unit of Study offers students the opportunity to work collaboratively alongside a project supervisor,
potentially within a broader research group, to develop, research and communicate the findings of a
specific research project question/hypothesis. Students will be expected to think critically, solve complex
and unpredictable problems, and communicate their research findings in both written and oral format. In
the oral poster presentation assessment, students will communicate directly and openly and receive
valuable critical feedback on their work.
Through the implementation of a project supervisor, this Unit of Study offers students the opportunity to
test and develop their cumulative skills, creativity and confidence by working independently and
collaboratively within a scientific laboratory setting. These skills will be integral to undertaking further
studies in their respective field and in the future workplace.
This Unit of Study enables students to develop themselves as independent, responsible and ethical
researchers. Students will be introduced to all facets of ethical and safe laboratory conduct and develop
awareness of the internal VU policies and government legislature that regulates the ethical conduct of
human and animal experimentation, and of OH& S procedures specific to safe laboratory practice.
Students will receive structured feedback on their experience of the above VU Graduate Capabilities.

The project supervisor will suggest appropriate journal papers to commence the students reading on the
research topic, which will be sought by the student.
A comprehensive Unit of Study guide including information on the preparation of the project report and
oral poster presentation, and guidelines/requirements for students completing research projects external

Submission procedure
All paper-based assessments must be submitted with the completed assessment cover sheets.
All on-line assessments must have the Student Disclaimer accepted at the point of submission.
If you are unable to undertake or complete an assessment due to adverse circumstances the following
arrangements may apply:
If you are unable to submit an assessment item on time, due to circumstances outside your control, you
may apply for a short extension of time of less than five (5) days. The standard penalty for late submission
without an approved short extension will be 5% of the total possible mark per day. If submission is
overdue by more than ten (10) days, five (5) days for VU Online and three (3) days in a Block, the work
will not be assessed. Full details of the procedure for applying for a short extension are available here.

Special consideration is available for students who experience acute unexpected circumstances which
have an adverse impact on their performance in assessable tasks, submission of assessment tasks or
examination attendance; or who require an extension of longer than five (5) days from the due date for an
assessment.
In exceptional circumstances, alternative examinations within the current examination period are available
for students who apply at least five (5) working days prior to the commencement of the examination
period.

assessment is not available in First Year College (Block) Units.
