Sample Problem Seatwork/Assignment

A. Here is a hypothetical yield dataset for a randomized complete block design in

a single factor experiment for 4 rice varieties in 4 replications. The dataset is
based on lowland varieties of rice in the Philippines:

Variety Replication 1 Replication 2 Replication 3 Replication 4

V1 3.5 3.8 3.6 3.7

V2 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.0

V3 3.9 3.8 3.7 3.9

V4 4.1 4.2 4.0 4.1

Questions:

1. Please supply the hypothesis to be tested for this study!

2. Perform a statistical analysis to prove or disprove your hypothesis using statistical

software such as SPASOR or SPSS, then present you results, interpret, and discuss.

3. Perform a test for means comparison Using turkey’s and DMRT.

B. Here is a hypothetical yield data set for a randomized complete block design in a two factor
experiment for 4 rice varieties and 3 levels of Nitrogen applications per hectare in 4 replications.

Here is the dataset in table form:

Variety Nitrogen Level Replication 1 Replication 2 Replication 3 Replication 4

V1 60kgN/ha 3.5 3.8 3.6 3.7

90kgN/ha 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.0

120kgN/ha 4.2 4.3 4.1 4.2

V2 60kgN/ha 3.9 3.8 3.7 3.9

90kgN/ha 4.1 4.2 4.0 4.1

120kgN/ha 4.3 4.5 4.2 4.3

V3 60kgN/ha 3.8 3.9 3.7 3.8

90kgN/ha 4 4.1 4 4

120kgN/ha 4.2 4.3 4.1 4.2

V4 60kgN/ha 4 3.9 3.8 4.1

90kgN/ha 5.2 5.4 5.2 2

120kgN/ha 5.8 6 5.5 5.9

Questions:
1. What are three null hypotheses for this hypothetical data? Please state!

2. Please write the treatment combinations or interaction for this research!

3. Prove or disprove your hypotheses using the ANOVA technique by using either SPSS or
SPASOR? Discuss you ANOVA results!

4. Please perform a comparisson of means between Varieties, between Nitrogen levels, and between
treatment means using Tukey’s and DMRT! Discuss you results in relation to your hypotheses in
Question 1.
C. Here is a hypothetical dummy data set for split-plot experimental design in Agriculture using 3
levels of varieties as main plots and 3 levels of nitrogen application per hectare as sub-plots (60, 90,
and 120) in three replications. The data set is presented in the table below:

Varieties Nitrogen (kg/ha) Replication 1 Replication 2 Replication 3

V1 60 4.47 4.11 4.11

V1 90 6.17 6.17 6.17

V1 120 7.82 7.82 7.82

V2 60 3.29 3.29 3.29

V2 90 4.94 4.94 4.94

V2 120 6.59 6.59 6.59

V3 60 2.47 2.47 2.47

V3 90 3.71 3.71 3.71

V3 120 4.95 4.95 4.95
