It is with great pleasure that I am writing to apply for the Ph.D. position in your research group
at the National University of Singapore. Understanding how habitat structure, plant taxonomic
diversity, and functional diversity contribute to insect communities in Singapore has truly caught
my attention. Insects play a crucial part in ecosystem functioning due to their main role as
pollinators, decomposers, and prey for other organisms. I strongly believe that by studying how
habitat structure and diversity of plants influence insect communities, we can gain insights into
the key factors that support healthy and resilient ecosystems.
My academic background and research experience in functional ecology have equipped me with
a deep understanding of the complex interactions within ecological communities. I take great
pride in mentioning that during my bachelor's thesis, I collaborated with Dr. Francisco Cuesta to
study functional leaf traits of 119 tree species along a 3000-meter elevation transect. Our
research focused on understanding how taxonomic diversity shapes functional strategies in
secondary Andean montane forests. However, I recognize that I have yet to explore one crucial
aspect of community ecology, which is the biotic component.
Through this experience, I have not only learned to develop laboratory protocols to determine
leaf functional traits but also to build a pipeline from scratch to work with this data since this
groundbreaking study had never been conducted before. Working in the field undoubtedly
presents unique challenges given their unpredictable weather conditions. However, I embraced
all the obstacles with determination, persisting to successfully complete all tasks at hand. I also
gained skills in organizing and conducting statistical analyses, as well as extracting significant
insights from the data. Finally, all the research team’s efforts led to the publication of our
research. My first publication and one of the many contributions I expect to make to science.
Since then, I have been involved in other scientific collaborations and gained further experience
as a laboratory assistant before pursuing my master's degree. I have also collaborated in a study
conducted in high Andean moorland, determining functional leaf traits of herbaceous species.
Currently, I am focusing on studying photosynthetic pigments in trees, aiming to unravel the
underlying mechanisms governing tree responses to environmental stressors. This program has
deepened my understanding of plant physiology and the importance of investigating the
diversity and dynamics of photosynthetic pigments for understanding forest ecosystem
resilience.
In conclusion, these experiences have nurtured my research creativity and shaped me into a
collaborative and resilient individual. I can confidently state that ecosystem ecology is my
greatest passion and one of my strongest motivations for joining your research group. I am eager
to contribute my skills, knowledge, and passion to the research conducted at the National
University of Singapore. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to
discussing my qualifications further and contributing to the exciting projects in your research
group.
Sincerely,
