Questions
1. Discuss the level turn performance of an aircraft with a neat sketch.
2. Consider a twin-engine turbofan powered executive jet aircraft. It has (T/W) = 0.38, (W/S) = 3600
N/m2, CD0 = 0.015, K = 0.08. For this aircraft, calculate the following at sea-level conditions:
i. Minimum turn radius
ii. Velocity corresponding to minimum turn radius
iii. Load factor corresponding to minimum turn radius
iv. Maximum turn rate
v. Velocity corresponding to maximum turn rate
vi. Load factor corresponding to maximum turn rate
3. Discuss the pull-up and pulldown performance of an aircraft with a neat sketch. Show that in the
limiting case of large load factor, the expressions for R and ω reduce to the same form.
4. The aerodynamic and structural limitations of an aircraft is contained in the V-n diagram.
(i) Plot the V-n diagram for a typical jet trainer aircraft, indicating positive and negative limiting
and ultimate load factors.
(ii) Explicate the significance of these load factors in relation to the manoeuvre boundaries of
the aircraft.
(iii) On the V-n diagram indicate the aerodynamic limit on the load factor imposed by (CL) max.
(iv) Further, mark the manoeuvre point on the V-n diagram. Discuss the importance of
1
manoeuvre point and write the expression for the velocity of the aircraft corresponding to
this point.
6. For a commercial aircraft whose characteristics are given below, calculate the approximate ground
roll distance, sg, and airborne distance, sa. With these, calculate the total take off distance.
Mass, W = 33,112 kg
Wing span, S = 22.86 m
Assume engine thrust during ground roll, Tr = 11283 kg
CL,max = 1.86
V stall = 56.8 m/s
8. Calculate the total landing distance of an aircraft whose characteristics are given below:
Wingspan = 54 ft
Wing area = 318 ft2
Normal gross weight = 19,500 lb
Fuel capacity: 1200 gal of kerosene
Power plant: two turbofan engines of 3600 lb thrust each at sea level
Specific fuel consumption = 0.6 lb of fuel/(lb thrust)(h)
Parasite drag coefficient CD0 = 0.02
Oswald efficiency factor e = 0.81
Assume that during landing, since spoilers are used, no lift is generated. Also assume that the
spoilers increase CD0 by 12 %
Use the following simplified formula for calculating the landing distance:
