PROJECT: DRIVE SAFER

WTMJ-TV, MILWAUKEE
VIEWING GUIDE

Submitted for your consideration is a representative sample of the collective effort from our
reporting, photojournalism, and production teams.

From the 468 stories filed over the last year, we present you with our best effort at “moving the
needle” on a life-or-death issue.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
We embark on our year-long mission to make the streets of Milwaukee safer.

ENFORCEMENT
When Project: Drive Safer began, Wisconsin law gave police and the courts few tools to use
against reckless drivers. Even the worst repeat offenders would often drive away with nothing
more than a traffic ticket.
Our dogged reporting on the worst repeat offender in Milwaukee exposed the weaknesses in the
law and the unwillingness of police and prosecutors to do more. As a result of this reporting,
lawmakers are considering an overhaul of the criminal code to ensure repeat and habitual traffic
offenders face felony charges.
This legislation is in addition to three new laws signed by Gov. Tony Evers. Lawmakers credit
these laws to the persistent reporting of Project: Drive Safer.

ENGINEERING
Milwaukee's reckless driving problem is worst in communities that have long felt neglected –
communities of color. These reports explain how engineering decisions made over decades
resulted with streets as wide as highways cutting through the places where people live. Our
reporting amplified the voices of these communities and resulted in long sought changes.

EDUCATION
Two decades ago, state lawmakers ended universal drivers’ education in Wisconsin schools. We
explore the barriers that now exist to ensuring young drivers are taught basic responsibility at the
wheel – as well as the rules of the road. Our persistent reporting helped press lawmakers to
begin restoring this teenage rite of passage. We also conducted a month-long campaign to raise
money for a driver education program operated by the Greater Milwaukee Urban League.
