CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Working and studying while in college can be rewarding and tiring. Many students can relate how difficult to

study in college compare in high school. The class schedule is hectic, exams are worth more, reading is more

intense and the school expenses requires huge amount of money. The financial burden of education fees are

rising. Due to continues increasing price of school fees and other education finances, families tend to face

financial crises particularly in managing the budget of family income. Money is the main key in college in

which students acquire tremendous amount of debt to pay off. As a solution many college students work while

attending school in which in return has an effect. Some students forgo these opportunities out of fear that part

time job will distract them from school.

In many communities students are involved in part time employment during their school years. The number of

college students who work and study during college has dramatically increased over the years. According to a

new research study from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, more than 70% of

college students have worked and studied at the same time over 25 years. Additionally, the same source also

reports that their average working hours are 30 hours per week ( Rapacon, & CNBC.com, S. T.,2015). Financial

trouble, insufficient income and debt, skill development and major requirements are common reasons students

choose and pursue par-time work. Financial problems are vital issue for everyone, specially students. Most

students have to struggle to make ends meet as they come from underprivileged families.(Parma, 2019)

Combining academic duties with paid work also has negative consequences. According to previous researches

employed students have problems with balancing the workload they take on and obligations related to their

studies. Employment at full time students hinder their academic achievement and limits the time for studying.

( Tengiz Verula, Revaz Jorbenadze 2022). They are less likely to study successfully because their work takes

too much time and energy. Many students work while attending school, and these working students realized that

handling their twin duties has positive and negative consequences. In fact, Filipino full-time workers who
decide to work part-time face various hurdles (Yanbarisova, 2015). Burgos et al. (2020) added that college

students experience obstacles in their careers, schools, money and personal life, putting working students in a

situation were they are more likely to drop out.
