The Legend of Sapalewa and Makina River
The Legend of Sapalewa and Makina River
In ancient times in Seram Island, West Seram District, especially in Taniwel District,
there was one family. The family's father named Sapalewa and the mother named Makina. They
have two children, the eldest male named Saku which means "strong" and the youngest woman
named Manate which means "red".
This family's livelihood are gardening and hunting animals in the forest. One day, Sapalewa
and Makina go gardening. Before they are going, Makina give a message to his son Saku, he
said "Mom and Dad will go gardening, you have to keep Manate and do not play outside the
house.
When Sapalewa and Makinah left the house, suddenly the heavy rain fell. Saku and
Manate go out from their house. They didn’t remember the message from their mother, Because
of the heavy rains, Saku saw the water so swiftly flowing from the gutter beside their house.
Saku said to Manate, "Take the fish trap which is made by dad in the kitchen". Then, Manate
take it and give it to Saku. After that, Saku put the fish trap inside the gutter. He said in his heart
that if they put it there, may be a shrimp or fish can enter on it.
Then, Saku come into the house while waiting for the rain stop, Saku and Manate ran out of the
house to see the contents of the fish trap that they put.
Apparently, there is an eel in the fish trap. Then, they take the eel. After that, they
clean, cut and cook it. After cooking the eel, Saku kept it. In the late afternoon Saku and
Manate’s parents came home from the garden. Their Mom went to the kitchen to cook for
dinner. Then, she called Saku, Manate and their father to eat. Makina said to Saku and
Manate,"Tonight we do not have side dish, you just eat it because your dad did not go for
hunting". Saku said to his mother, "It's okay mom because we have side dishes, I and Manate
cooked the eel”. Without asking, they were eating the eels which is given by Saku.
After eating, they went to take a rest because they were very tired.
At midnight something strange happens to them. They awoke from sleep and ran out
of the house, because they felt the whole body was so cold they could hardly speak. They didn’t
know what happened to them. They ran away but the cold was shivering until they could not run
because their feet had started to melt. They sat and gathered in one place. Then Sapalewa said
to all of them, "Here, in this place we will split up. Makina and Manate, both of you will go to the
East, while me and Saku will go to the west ". After Sapalewa said, eventually they melted from
the feet until the whole body became water. The river water of Makina and Manate flows to the
east without any obstacles and Sapalewa and Saku river water flows to the West but gets a
huge hurdle. They cannot flow because it is blocked by a rock mountain. The water grew so
much so it becomes a large pond and drowned the village around the rock mountain. The
People are anxious and worried because the water will spill over into their village.
All the villager are looking for ways to get the water flowing to the sea. Finally they think maybe
by throwing some valuables, the water will go down. Then, they throw an old dish but the water
does not go down, they try to throw the white chickens but the water does not go down and they
end up throwing an old grandfather, because they think by throwing the old man, the water will
dry. But the water grew too much. The villager were very confused and they didn’t know what to
do.
Suddenly a voice from inside the pool said, "Apu tete mai tete hatu", which means that's not
what I’m asking but I’m just asks for a chisel to carve this stone. And then, the people throw a
chisel into the pool, after that there was a sound from the pool like a carving stone. Finally, the
water flows to the western sea of Taniwel district. The area around the place was very beautiful
and can be a tourist spot.
The moral value of the story is as a child we must obey to our parents and let us keep the
environment well.
