This document summarizes planar kinetics of rigid bodies including equations of motion. It provides the kinetic equations of motion relating resultant force and moment to linear and angular acceleration. Rectilinear and curvilinear translation equations are presented. Two example problems are included, one calculating acceleration, time, and normal reactions for a car accelerating from rest, the other finding the maximum angular acceleration of a crate on a rotating platform without slipping or tipping. Key equations and solutions are shown.

Section 17A-1: 17.1
Section 17A-2: 17.2, 17.3
Class Note for Section 17A-2:
17.2 Planar Kinetic Equations of Motion
F = m aG
MG = IG
Fx = m (aG)x Fy = m (aG)y
MG = IG or
MP = IG - m(aG)x + m(aG)y
17.3 Equations of Motion: Translation
* Rectilinear Translation:
Fx = m (aG)x Fy = m (aG)y
MG = 0 OR MA = m(aG) d
* Curvilinear Translation:
Fn = m (aG)n Ft = m (aG)t
MG = 0 OR MB = e [m(aG)t] - h [m(aG)n]

Example Problems for Section 17A-2:
EP1. The sports car has a mass of 2 Mg and a center of mass at G. Draw a FBD on the figure and determine the shortest time it takes for the car to reach a speed of 50 km/h, starting from rest, if the engine drives the rear wheels only, whereas the front wheels are free rolling. Also, find the normal reactions at each wheel. The coefficient of kinetic and static friction between the wheels and road is k = 0.2 and s = 0.3, respectively. Neglect the mass of the wheels. FA = 0, FB = 0.3NB + Fx = m(aG)x: 2(0.3NB) = 2000 aG (1) CCW+ MA = m aG d 2NB(2) - 2000(9.81)(1.25) = (2000)aG(0.35) (2) Solving (1) & (2): aG = 1.941 m/s2, NB = 6471 = 6470 N Ans. + Fy = m(aG)y: 2NA + 2NB - 2000(9.81) = 0 NA = 3339 = 3340 N Ans. v = 50 km/h = 50(1000)/3600 = 13.89 m/s v = vo + aG t 13.89 = 0 + 1.941 t t = 7.16 s Ans.
EP2. The 50-kg uniform crate rests on the platform for
which the coefficient of static friction is s = 0.5. If the supporting links have an angular velocity = 1 rad/s, determine the greatest angular acceleration they can have so that the crate does not slip or tip at the instant = 30 as shown. rB/A = - 4 sin 30 i - 4 cos 30 j = - 2 i - 3.464 j aB = aA + x rB/A - 2 rB/A = 0 + ( k) x (- 2 i - 3.464 j) - (1)2 (- 2 i - 3.464 j) = - 2 j + 3.464 i + 2 i + 3.464 j aG = aB = (2 + 3.464) i + (3.464 - 2) j + Fx = m(aG)x: FC = (50)(2 + 3.464) (1) + Fy = m(aG)y: NC - 50(9.81) = (50)(3.464 - 2) (2) CW+ MG = 0: NC (d) - FC (0.75) = 0 (3) Assume crate is about to slip: Set FC = 0.5 NC (3) d = 0.375 m > 0.25 m (not OK) Crate must tip. Then, set d = 0.25 m and solve Eqs. (1), (2) & (3). NC = 605 N, FC = 202 N, = 0.587 rad/s2 Ans. Note: (FC)max = 0.5(605) = 303 N > 202 N OK
