1923

TURKEY IS A COUNTRY THAT ACHIEVED ITS


INDEPENDENCE IN 1923, AFTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR
AND THE FALL OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. BEFORE ITS
INDEPENDENCE, THE TERRITORY THAT TODAY MAKES
UP TURKEY HAD BEEN PART OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE
FOR MORE THAN 600 YEARS.
1918
In 1918, the Ottoman Empire was
defeated in World War I and was
forced to sign the Treaty of
Sèvres in 1920, which called for
the dissolution of the empire and
the creation of a series of
independent states on its
territory. This treaty was very
unpopular with the Turks, who
felt humiliated and frustrated by
the loss of their empire.
1922
Under the leadership of Mustafa
Kemal Atatürk, a Turkish
nationalist movement began to
take shape and fight against the
foreign occupying forces in the
country. In 1922, Turkish forces
achieved a major victory at the
Battle of Dumlupınar, ending the
Turkish war of independence.
Finally, in 1923, the Treaty of
Lausanne was signed, which
recognized the independence of Turkey
and established its current borders.
This treaty also guaranteed the
protection of ethnic minorities in Turkey
and established the political and legal
system of the new Turkish state.

Since then, Turkey has
