OR - PERIOPERATIVE NURSING TRENDS AND ISSUES

Abstract:

Perioperative nursing trends and issues refer to emerging and ongoing themes that affect the practice of
perioperative nursing. These include changes in technology, patient safety, interdisciplinary
collaboration, professional development, and staffing. Perioperative nursing is a complex and evolving
field that requires ongoing education and awareness of current trends and issues to improve patient care
and outcomes. This study summarizes what are the challenges of perioperative nurses and what attitude
should be encompases by the perioperative nurse.

Reflective essay

In a time of transformational leadership, one of the nurse managers most powerful tools is the ability to
inspire others with the vision of the future. There are many definitions of the word “vision” but in the
context of health care leadership, to envision is to imagine an idesl future and articulate the image in a
way that inspire other people (Tyrrell, 1994). More than ever, the future is uncharted territory (Scully,
1994). For this reason, perioperative nurse managers now face the challenge of developing visions in the
context of surgical technology and delivery systems that will bear little resemblance to the past.

There should encompasses the operating room, and these are:

1. Developing a Vision

2. Inspiring a Shared Commitment

3. Building a Trust Foundation

Challenge of Perioperative nurses

Losing Sight of the Vision, the nurse original vision is a clinic based on the best of nursing – a short
writing period, a caring staff, personal attention, and an attractive, nurturing physical environment. The
nurse lost her original vision of a clinic based on nursing ideals. There is no easy answer to this type of
dilemma, but it will occur more and more as perioperative nurses. Operating room (OR) nurses, who
work in ORs and significantly impact the surgical process, have also taken on a primary responsibility in
the COVID-19 pandemic (B. Ergen et al., 2022). Perioperative nursing involves caring for patients before,
during, and after surgical procedures. The nature of the job requires extensive training and knowledge in
surgical procedure, anesthesia, patient safety, as well as communication, teamwork and interpersonal
skills.

There are some of the emerging trends and issues in perioperative nursing:

1). Technological Advancements: Technological advancements in surgical procedures are revolutionizing

perioperative nursing, with an increasing number of surgeries being performed with minimally invasive
techniques. New instruments, equipment, monitoring and imaging systems are being introduced,
allowing for faster and safer surgeries and decreased surgical times. 2). Nurse Shortage: Perioperative
nursing is currently faced with a shortage of trained and experienced nurses. This is a result of an ageing
workforce, limited enrolment in nursing programs, and a heavy workload. The lack of skilled
perioperative nurses could lead to delayed surgeries, compromising patient safety. 3). Ethical Issues:
Ethical issues prevail in perioperative nursing, particularly regarding informed consent, patient
preferences and end-of-life care. The role of perioperative nurses is crucial in advocating for patients and
ensuring their rights and autonomy are prioritized.

The field of perioperative nursing is continuously evolving, with advancements in technology,

techniques, and collaborative healthcare approaches. Addressing the nursing shortage and prioritizing
patient safety are some of the critical current issues, which nursing leaders and policymakers should pay
attention to. The ultimate goal is to achieve high-quality patient-centered care in perioperative settings
