3. (a) Explain the physical significance of the van der waals’ parameters. (02marks)
(b) Using Van der waal’s equation, calculate the constant ‘a’ when two moles of a
gas confined in a 4 L flask exerts a pressure of 11.0 atmospheres at a temperature
of a 300 K. The value of ‘b’ is 0.05 L mol-1 (02marks)
(c) Gas M whose volume is 50cm3 and its composition was C = 46.1% and
N = 53.9% diffused through a hole for 20 seconds. The same volume of
oxygen diffused through the same hole for 15.7 seconds.
(i) Find the molecular mass and molecular formula of gas
(ii) What volume of CO2 would diffuse through the same hole for 20 seconds?

of the solution is 732 atm at 230C. Calculate the percentage by mass of NaCl in
the solution. (03marks)
(c) A solution containing 3g of calcium nitrate in 100cm3 of water has osmotic
pressure of 11.2atm. Calculate the apparent degree of dissociation of the salt in
this solution at 12oC (03marks)
5. (a) With the aid of chemical equation show the followings can be prepared:-
(i) Metal hydroxides by direct method
(ii) Metal hydrogen carbonate
(iii) Insoluble carbonates (03marks)

(b) Give reasons to account for the following observations:-

7. (a) (i) Explain why pure liquids and solids can be ignored while writing the
equilibrium constant expression?
(ii) Write the expression for the equilibrium constant, KC for the following reaction:

(b) For the reaction CO + 2H2 CH3OH(g) hydrogen gas was introduced into a five
litre flask at 327C, containing 0.2mol of CO(g) and a catalyst, until the pressure is
4.92atm. At this point, 0.1mole of CH3OH is formed. Calculate equilibrium
constant Kc and Kp. (05marks)
(c) When 1.2 moles of hydrogen and 0.75 moles of Iodine are allowed to reach
equilibrium in 1dm3 at 4500C and 1 atm , the amount of HI at equilibrium is 1.36
moles .
(i) Calculate the Kc at 4500C.
(ii) How many grams of hydrogen should be added to the system such that the
amount of HI is raised to 1.40 moles at 4500C. (03marks)

10. (a) With the aid of chemical equations, describe how the ozone layer is formed and
depleted or destroyed. (05marks)
(b) Makapera was advised to add 260kg of nitrogen in his farm, what weight of
fertilizer should he buy to meet the demand, if the fertilizer bag contained 60%
urea (CO(NH2)2) (04marks)
(c) A certain soil contains the following cations, where all values are expressed in
meq /100 g of oven dry soil Mn2+=20, Ca2+ = 38, Na+ = 4.0, K+ = 6, H+ = 24 and
Al3+ = 8.0. If the cation exchange capacity is 96 meq/100g of oven dry soil.
Calculate:
i. The percentage base saturation of this soil.
ii. The quantity of calcium in grams present in 100g of oven dry soil. (06marks)
