Psychology throughout the Lifespan

The Impact of Cohort

Every individual in each society belongs to a cohort. A cohort is a group of people who are born

almost at the same time and share histories. Historical and cultural events experienced by

members of a cohort greatly affect their goals and values. One of the impacts of a cohort is that it

equips an individual with a sense of belonging. A sense of belonging is crucial for physical and

mental health as it manages stress. Another impact of a cohort is increasing the self-esteem of an

individual belonging to it. The cohort is an important aspect of society.

The Impact of Socioeconomic Status

All of us have experienced social-economic status depending on the class of family we grew in.

Social-economic status has a great impact on the life of all human beings. It affects our physical

and mental health, education, and the ability to meet our basic needs. People from the underclass,

mostly temporary workers, are looked down upon by members from the upper classes due to

their poverty level. Members from this class have higher rates of depression, illicit drug use, and

attempted suicide. (“Lifespan Development”) There is a higher rate of infant mortality in this

class. Individuals from the upper class are characterized by more wealth. People from this class

experience better health, job satisfaction, and no problem in satisfying their wants. The working

class owns less property when compared with those of the upper class. They do not find it

difficult to cater to their basic needs but find it difficult to save.

The Impact of Culture and Ethnicity

Culture and ethnicity have a tremendous impact on every individual life. Culture is referred to as

the characteristics of a group of individuals that includes language and social habits.

Participating in culture enables one their learning and valuable skills. Through cultural

participation, children can instill resilience and build their self-esteem, which enables them to

overcome difficulties later in life. Cultural involvement has been found to greatly impact the

mental and physical health of members of society. Ethnicity can be described as individuals who

recognize themselves through shared features such as nation, religion, and society that

distinguish them from others. Ethnicity has various effects on the behaviors of individuals living

in society. People from the greater ethnic group are found to have high self-esteem and self-

confidence. These traits may be inherited or adapted from society. On the other hand, people

from minority ethnic groups have a negative attitude towards life.

The Impact of Gender

Gender has been found to affect how individuals in society behave and interact with one another.

Research has shown that children show diverse tendencies when it comes to interaction based on

gender. Girls have been found to interact with friends of the same gender. (“Lifespan

Development”) Boys, on the other hand, socialize with individuals based on shared interests

regardless of gender. It has been discovered that every society has gender role expectations.

These expectations have various impacts on the members of society. For example, some societies

expect women to take care of children and perform home chores as men look for finances to

cater for the family bills. This gender stereotype has resulted in most women not being educated

since their role is to take care of the homestead. Men, on the other hand, acquire enough

education so that they can manage finances properly.
