Specification
DTW 1213
Protective Fabric Sleeve for Single Hydraulic Hoses
Scope:
This standard is intended to establish general specifications, performance requirements, and uniform
methods for the testing and evaluation of hydraulic hose protective fabric sleeve for single hose; it does not
apply to the hose cover. The purpose of the sleeve is to protect the hydraulic hose from excessive abrasion.
Two performance levels, A and B are established with Level A being the best. Protective sleeve performance
levels are determined by application.
1. Performance Requirements:
1.1. These sleeves must resist deterioration from sunlight, weather, paint, oil and grease through a
temperature range of -40°C to 120°C.
This section defines the test procedure and establishes the minimum force required to pull the
protective sleeve loose from the attachment.
1.2.1 A minimum of 3 test samples shall be made and tested. See Illustration A for drawing size
and length of test hose.
1.2.1.1 Test and verification of attachment of clamp is only needed on (-08) hose.
1.2.3 The hose end fitting shall be fixed at one end. The sleeve end shall be clamped, pulled, and
measured. An example of a fixture for the pull test is in Figure 1.
1.2.3.1 This is one example of a fixture, it is up to the manufacturer to determine the setup,
complete the test, and submit the results. This is a destructive test.
1.2.4 The pull rate of the sleeve shall not exceed 15 mm/min.

Illustration A
This section defines the test procedure and establishes the minimum abrasion test cycles required
for each performance level.
Hoses less than 25.4 mm nominal inside diameter shall be bent 180° over the mandrel and hoses
of 25.4 mm nominal inside diameter and larger shall be bent 90° over the mandrel.
After bending, the protective sleeve and hose assembly shall be allowed to warm to room
temperature, then be visually examined. There shall be no fractures of the protective sleeve
material.
2. Sleeve Classifications:
2.1. Sleeve performance is classified by thickness and shall conform to abrasion test level (A or B)
unless otherwise specified.
2.2. If a specified performance level is required, it must be specified. If not specified, sleeve material
shall be Level A. (Example callout: DTW1213 Performance Level B)
3. Color:
3.1. Sleeve material shall have a similar color to JDM F9T – Low Gloss Black unless otherwise
indicated on the print.
4.1. The sleeve inside diameter can be 10-50% larger than hose nominal outside diameter.
4.4. Total sleeve length is the length specified in Section 4.3, plus 2 times the clamp width, plus a
minimum of 10 mm.
5.1. Clamp each end of the sleeve to the crimped part of each hose end fitting (coupling).
5.2. Each end of the sleeve should be clamped to the crimped part of each hose end fitting (coupling).
If the sleeve does not cover the complete hose, the end not fixed to the coupling shall be restrained
with a tie band.
5.3. A minimum of 5 mm of sleeve must extend beyond each clamp. The sleeve cannot extend over
the fixed hex of the end fittings.
5.3.1. If the clamp width exceeds 15 mm, the sleeve is only required to extend beyond the
clamp by 1 mm.
5.4. Hose assembly part number shall be legible after sleeve attachment.
6. Drawing Note:
6.2. Any additions or exceptions to DTW 1213 shall be noted on the drawing.
7.1. Tubular double plain weave – 1000 Denier yarn minimum should be used. Textile polyamide
tubular weave sleeve shall meet 200,000 abrasion cycles per ISO 6945 or equivalent test.
