7 Segments
display
The seven-segment display is
a commonly used electronic
display that consists of seven
individual segments
arranged in the shape of the
digit "8." Each segment can
be individually turned on or
off, allowing the display of
numbers, letters, and some
symbols. Let's explore the
history, definition, working
principle, uses, and examples
of seven-segment displays.
History:
The concept of the seven-
segment display dates back
to the early 1900s when
mechanical displays were
used for numerical readouts.
However, the modern
electronic version of the
seven-segment display was
developed in the late 1960s. It
quickly gained popularity due
to its simplicity, low cost, and
ease of use.
How it works:
Each segment of the
seven-segment display is
made of a light-emitting
diode (LED) or a liquid
crystal display (LCD). The
segments are arranged in
such a way that they can
form any digit or
character by selectively
turning on the required
segments.

LCD
Liquid Crystal Display
LCD, short for Liquid
Crystal Display, is a type
of flat-panel display that
uses the properties of
liquid crystals to produce
images. It consists of a
layer of liquid crystals
sandwiched between two
transparent electrodes
and polarizing filters. The
liquid crystals can be
manipulated to control
the passage of light,
resulting in the display of
information.
History:
The history of LCD technology can be
traced back to the late 19th century
when Friedrich Reinitzer first discovered
liquid crystals. However, it wasn't until
the 1960s that practical applications for
LCDs began to emerge. The first
functional LCD was developed by George
H. Heilmeier and his team at RCA in 1968.
Since then, LCDs have become one of the
most widely used display technologies.
How it works:
LCDs work on the
principle of the electro-
optical effect of liquid
crystals. Liquid crystals
are materials that
exhibit properties of
both liquids and solids.
In an LCD, the liquid
crystals are arranged
in a specific pattern
between two glass
substrates. The glass
substrates are coated
with transparent
electrodes.
When an electric current is
applied to the electrodes, it
creates an electric field that
affects the alignment of the
liquid crystals. The liquid
crystals respond to the
electric field by twisting or
untwisting, which changes
the polarization of light
passing through them. The
polarizing filters placed
above and below the liquid
crystal layer control the
orientation of the light.
