    In high school I had always admired the/those boys who sang/played/used to sing/play in a band. The
    achievement of being part of a band that performed two or three times a month, on Saturdays, seemed
    impossible/out of reach. Girls were always around them/would always flock around them, and they
    always proudly strolled/strutted down the school corridors for two weeks after each concert. My mum had
    given me piano lessons and I had already composed some songs (of my own). But for my shyness /If it
    hadn’t been for my shyness, I could have become a member of that/a band a long time/long before.
