Objective of Course
To provide the students with some useful tools for his/her future research.
To help the students develop a way of thinking in quantitative terms.
Course Description
The Course will cover several key models as well as identification and estimation
methods used in Research.
We shall be exploring some leading models and analyzing the structures, providing
methods of identification, estimation and inference.
You will get lots of hands on experience with using the methods on real datasets.

Unit-I: Introduction to Business Research Methods 10 Hours
Meaning and Objectives of Research; Types of Research: a) Pure, Basic and
Fundamental; b) Applied; c) Empirical; d) Scientific and Social; e) historical; f)
Exploratory; g) Descriptive and h) Causal; Concepts in Research: Variables,
Quantitative and Qualitative Research; Stages in Research process; Characteristics of
Good Research; Hypothesis: Meaning Nature, Significance, Types of Hypothesis,
Sources; Research Design Meaning, Definition, Need and Importance, Steps in
Research Design, Essential of Good Research Design, Area/Scope of Research
Designing and Types – Descriptive, Exploratory and Casual; Sampling: a) Meaning of
Sample and Sampling, b) Methods of Sampling: (i) Non-Probability Sampling –
Convenient, Judgement, Quota Snow Ball (ii) Probability- Simple Random, Stratified,
Cluster, Multi Stage.
Unit-II: Data Collection and Processing 10Hours
Types of Data and Sources: Primary and Secondary Data Sources; Methods of
Collection of Primary Data: a) Observations – (i) Structured and Unstructured, (ii)
Disguised and Undisguised and (iii) Mechanical Observations (Use of Gadgets); b)
Experimental – (i) Field and (ii) Laboratory, c) Interview: (i) Personal Interview (ii)
Focused Group, (iii) In Depth Interviews – Method d) Survey Telephonic Survey, Mail,
E-mail, Internet Survey, Social Media and Media Listening, e) Survey Instruments: (i)
Questionnaire Designing, (ii) Types of Questions – A) Structural / Close Ended and B)
Unstructured / Open Ended- C) Dichotomous and D) Multiple Choice Questions, f)
Scaling Techniques: (i) Likert scale and (ii) Semantic Differential Scale.
Unit- III: Data Analysis and Interpretation 05 Hours
Processing of Data (i) Editing – Field and Office editing (ii) Coding- Meaning and
essential and (iii) Tabulation Note; Analysis of Data: Meaning, Purpose and Types;
Interpretation of Data: Essentials, Importance and Significance of Processing Data;
Multivariate Analysis Concept Only; Testing of Hypothesis Concept and Problems: (i)
Chi- Square Test and (ii) Z and T- test (For Large and Small Sample)
Unit- IV: Advanced Technique in Report Writing 05 Hours
Report Writing: Meaning, Importance, Functions of Project, Essential of a Good Report,
Concept of Good Report, Steps in Writing a Report, Types of Reports, Footnotes and
Bibliography; Ethics and Research; Objectivity, Confidentiality and Anonymity in
Research; Plagiarism.
Course outcomes:
· Explain key research concepts and issues.
· Demonstrate knowledge of research process (reading, evaluating and
developing).
· Identify, explain, compare and prepare the key elements of the research
proposal / report.
· Help students to choose appropriate research method.
