Ele1501 Assignment 2
Question 1:
1) Energy is what makes change happen and can be transferred from one object to another. It can
also be transferred from one form to another. It is measured in Joules or watt-seconds.
Power is the rate at which energy is transferred. Power quantity is not storable, and it cannot be
transformed from one type to another. It is measured in Watt or Joules per second.
2) An insulator is defined as the materials which do not allow the electric current or heat to pass
through it. The covalent bond between the atoms is very strong, thus electrons do not move
freely. Its resistivity is very high.
A conductor is defined as the material which allows the electric current or heat to pass through
it. The electrons move freely from atom to atom when the potential difference is applied across
them.
3) Efficiency is defined as the ability to achieve an end result with little to no waste, effort or
energy.
4) Resistivity is the resistance per unit length and cross-sectional area. It is the property of the
material that opposes the flow of charge or the flow of electric current. It is measured in ohm.
Question 2:
V = I.R R=?
240 = 12 x R I = 12A
240
R= 12
V = 240V
= 20Ω t = 20 hours
P=?
P = V.I
= 240 x 12
= 2880 W
1 kW = 1000W
2880
= 1000
= 2,88 Kw x 20 hours
= 57,6 kWh
Question 3:
a = 𝜋𝑟 2
122
=𝜋 2
= 36π 𝑚𝑚2
= 36π x 10−6 𝑚2
𝑃𝑥𝑙
R= 𝑎
(1,7×10−8 Ω𝑚)(1200𝑚)
=
36𝜋 × 10−6 𝑚2
1,7 × 106×1200
=
108 ×36𝜋
= 0,180Ω
Question 4:
𝑅20 1+∝ (20)
𝑅90
= 1+∝0 (90) 𝑅20 = 200Ω
0
0,004
∝0 = °𝐶
𝑅20 (1 + 90 ∝0 )
∴ 𝑅90 =
(1 + 20 ∝0 )
200[(1+90(0,004)]
=
[(1+20(0,004)]
200(1+0,36)
= (1+0,08)
200(1,36)
= 1,08
= 251,85Ω
