FOR THE EXAMINERS

Part 1: SOCIAL INTERACTION (2-3 minutes):

In this part, the examiner introduces himself or herself and asks the candidates to say their
names in turn. The examiner then asks each candidate 3-5 questions about their daily life,
family, hobbies, career, environment, and so on. The candidates respond to the questions about
present circumstances, past experiences and future plans. In this part, the candidate is not
provided time to prepare for the answers.

Part 2: TWO-WAY COLLABORATIVE TASK (2 minutes for preparation and 3 minutes


for performance):
In this part, the two candidates are given an oral instruction and provided with a card to form
the basis for a task which they carry out together. The candidates are expected to work towards
a negotiated completion of the task and it is this interaction that counts, rather than the actual
completion of the task.

Part 3: FOLLOW-UP DISCUSSION (3-4 minutes)


The interlocutor leads a discussion with the two candidates by asking questions which
encourage the candidates to broaden and discuss further the topics introduced in Part 2.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Candidates are assessed on their own individual performance and not in relation to each other,
according to the following four analytical criteria: grammar and vocabulary, discourse
management, pronunciation and interactive communication.

Grammar and Vocabulary


This refers to the accurate and appropriate use of a range of grammatical forms and vocabulary.
Performance is viewed in terms of the overall effectiveness of the language used in spoken
interaction.

Discourse Management
This refers to the candidate’s ability to link utterances together to form a coherent speech,
without undue hesitation. The utterances should be relevant to the tasks and should be arranged
logically to develop the themes or arguments required by the tasks.

Pronunciation
This refers to candidates’ ability to produce comprehensible utterances to fulfill the task
requirements. This includes stress, rhythm and intonation as well as individual sounds.

Interactive communication
This refers to candidates’ ability to use language to achieve meaningful communication. This
includes initiating and responding without undue hesitation, the ability to use interactive
strategies to maintain or repair communication, and sensitivity to the norms of turn-taking.
Marks for each of the criteria are awarded out of a ten-point scale.

Part 1 (Social interaction): 2.5 marks


Part 2 (Two-way collaborative task): 4.0 marks
Part 3 (Follow-up Discussion): 3.5 marks

Part I) Social Interaction

Let’s talk about your hobbies.


1. What do you often do in your free time?
Well, in my spare time I often read books, watch television and play sports with my
friends. I love this activities because it not only helps me unwind after a stressful
day but aslo do wonders for my mental and physical health.

2. How much time do you spend on that hobby a week?


It’s normally about 5 hours, I think that it takes me more time to getting into my
interest. However, when I set aside time for that hobbies I gain some useful new
knowledge and skills.

3. Who do you prefer spending your free time with?


I often spend as much time as I can for my family. Currently I’m studying at
university far away from home, so I want to spend quality time gathering with my
parents and helping my mother prepare for some meals.

Let’s talk about television.


1. Do you like watching TV?/ How much time do you spend watching TV?
Definitely yes, I’m interested in watching TV. I often spend my spare time
watching it to blow off some steam and be comfortable when I have no class or
days-off.
2. What types of TV programme/film do you like watching?
Well, I’m a big fan of detective story, therefore, I’m keen on watching a
programme which is called the famous detective Conan. Although I’m an adult, I
still have deep impression for it. It not only helps me let my hair down but aslo
gives me some useful information and practical knowledge.
3. What types of TV programme are popular in your country?
General speaking, there are a lot of types of popular TV programme which people
in my country are interested. In my point of view, maybe it is a romantic film genre
because it is received a lot of good reviews and it brings the excellent content.

Part II) Two-Way Collaborative Task


The examiners give the candidates a cue card and ask them to discuss together.
Candidates A and B will discuss the following situation for 3 minutes. They can
prepare for the discussion for 2 minutes.

Your class is going to get together and celebrate when exams are over. You and
your friends have been asked to decide to have a picnic, a party at someone’s house,
or a meal at a restaurant. Which options do you think is the best choice?

Part III) Follow-up discussion


The examiners encourage the candidates to develop the topic of the discussion in Part 2
by asking questions such as:
1. How do students relax themselves?

2. What activities do employers organize to help employees relax?

3. Do people nowadays have more ways to relax than in the past?

Let’s talk about where you live.


1. Where is your hometown? What do you like about your hometown?
Well, my hometown is QN province, which is on the central coast of Vietnam
2. Is there anything you don’t like it?/ Would you like to move to another city?
3. What do you want to change about your city?

Let’s talk about house


1. Do you live in a house or a dormitory? /'dɔ:mitɔ:ri/
2. What is your favorite room in your house? How is it decorated?
3. Which room does your family spend most of the time with?/ Do you prefer living
in a house or a flat?

Candidates A and B will discuss the following situation for 3 minutes. They can
prepare for the discussion for 2 minutes.

You are planning on buying a house, there are three options that need consideration:
well-equipped apartment on the 30th floor of the building in the city center; a big
house with a garden far away from the city center, and a small house in the city
center. What do you think is the best choice?

Part III) Follow-up discussion


The examiners encourage the candidates to develop the topic of the discussion in Part 2
by asking questions such as:
2. Do you think it's better to rent or to buy a place to live in?
3. Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their
parents?
11. What types of places (homes) do most people in your country live in?
12. Compare houses that rural people live in with the flats/apartments that most city
people live in.

Part I) Social Interaction

Let’s talk about studies.


1. What are you studying?/ Where are you studying?
2. Why did you choose this college/university?
3. What’s good about where you’re studying?/ What would you like to do after your

Let’s talk about learning English.


1. How long have you learned English?
2. What do you find interesting/difficult about learning English?
3. What advice would you give to someone starting to learn English?/ Would you
like to learn another language in the future?
Part II) Two-Way Collaborative Task

Candidates A and B will discuss the following situation for 3 minutes. They can
prepare for the discussion for 2 minutes.

A group of friends is discussing ways to improve speaking skill. Three possible


options are watching films/listening to music, practicing with friends and working
a part-time job to converse with foreigners. Which way do you think is the best
option? or you can add your own ideas.

Part III) Follow-up discussion


The examiners encourage the candidates to develop the topic of the discussion in Part 2
by asking questions such as:

1. How do you think that studying abroad is different from studying in one’s own
country?
2. What problems do you think students can face while studying abroad and why?
3. Do you think you will have many difficulties adapting to new culture?

Some of your friends are thinking about a place to go on holiday. Which of three
places do you think is the best options: sandy beach for sunbathing, picturesque
mountainous area for picnic or recreational center for games and films. You can
add your own option.

Part III) Follow-up discussion


The examiners encourage the candidates to develop the topic of the discussion in Part 2
by asking questions such as:
1. Which are more important to people, their family or their friends? Why?
2. What do you think are the most important qualities for friends to have
3. Which is more important, new friendships or old ones?

what to eat at the party: fast food, home-made food, or canned food/processed food
in the supermarket. Which one is the best option? You can add more option.

Part III) Follow-up discussion


The examiners encourage the candidates to develop the topic of the discussion in Part 2
by asking questions such as:

1. Why do you think some people choose to be vegetarians?


2. Is the food that people eat today different to the food that people used to eat in the
past? If yes, in what ways has it changed?
3. How do you think the way we eat will change in the future?
