In this part, the examiner introduces himself or herself and asks the candidates to say their
names in turn. The examiner then asks each candidate 3-5 questions about their daily life,
family, hobbies, career, environment, and so on. The candidates respond to the questions about
present circumstances, past experiences and future plans. In this part, the candidate is not
provided time to prepare for the answers.
Candidates are assessed on their own individual performance and not in relation to each other,
according to the following four analytical criteria: grammar and vocabulary, discourse
management, pronunciation and interactive communication.
Discourse Management
This refers to the candidate’s ability to link utterances together to form a coherent speech,
without undue hesitation. The utterances should be relevant to the tasks and should be arranged
logically to develop the themes or arguments required by the tasks.
Pronunciation
This refers to candidates’ ability to produce comprehensible utterances to fulfill the task
requirements. This includes stress, rhythm and intonation as well as individual sounds.
Interactive communication
This refers to candidates’ ability to use language to achieve meaningful communication. This
includes initiating and responding without undue hesitation, the ability to use interactive
strategies to maintain or repair communication, and sensitivity to the norms of turn-taking.
Marks for each of the criteria are awarded out of a ten-point scale.
Your class is going to get together and celebrate when exams are over. You and
your friends have been asked to decide to have a picnic, a party at someone’s house,
or a meal at a restaurant. Which options do you think is the best choice?
You are planning on buying a house, there are three options that need consideration:
well-equipped apartment on the 30th floor of the building in the city center; a big
house with a garden far away from the city center, and a small house in the city
center. What do you think is the best choice?
1. How do you think that studying abroad is different from studying in one’s own
country?
2. What problems do you think students can face while studying abroad and why?
3. Do you think you will have many difficulties adapting to new culture?
Some of your friends are thinking about a place to go on holiday. Which of three
places do you think is the best options: sandy beach for sunbathing, picturesque
mountainous area for picnic or recreational center for games and films. You can
add your own option.
You and your friend are planning for your birthday party, but you are wondering
what to eat at the party: fast food, home-made food, or canned food/processed food
in the supermarket. Which one is the best option? You can add more option.
