The Envirotech® Sentinel® SA1 is a Detection and Control System which is specifically
designed to protect haulers, graders, forestry, waste management machines and trucks, and
other vehicles and machines critical to operations and processes. The Sentinel SA1 System
uses a variety of detection technologies to sense flame and/or heat produced by fires, and to
ensure full-time protection of the equipment.
The Sentinel SA1 System is designed to offer fast installation while minimizing time to maintain
the system. This system has passed witnessed shock and vibration testing, and hose-wash
down, giving it full FM Approval for all vehicle types, plus is functional in extreme low and high
temperatures. The electronic portions of this system have been subjected to Radio Frequency
Interference (RFI) testing and have met or exceeded the testing parameters.
The Sentinel SA1 System offers fire protection with manual and/or automatic heat detection.

1-2.2 Detection
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 System can use heat detectors and/or flame detectors for
automatic fire detection. Two types of heat detection are available, a spot-type detector
(Detect-A-Fire) or continuous line type (LHS). Flame detection is accomplished by a dual-
spectrum infrared sensor located within the Infrared Detector (IR-1A).
1-2.3 Actuation
1-2.4 Suppression
The Sentinel SA1 is designed to discharge one or two fire suppression agents to suppress a
detected fire. For detailed information about the fire suppression system refer to the Envirotech
Sentinel DCS Fire Suppression System DIOM Manual (P/N 83-131550-000) and Envirotech
Sentinel LS Fire Suppression System DIOM Manual (P/N 83-130550-000).
The Envirotech Sentinel DCS Suppression System uses dry chemical to extinguish fires. Dry
chemical is suitable for suppressing Class A, B, and C fires. During actuation, dry chemical is
discharged from its cylinder via a hose to a nozzle, or multiple nozzles. Once the dry chemical
is discharged on the fire area, the fire is suppressed.
The Sentinel LS Suppression System uses Aquagreen XT wet chemical agent to extinguish
fires. Wet chemical is suitable for suppressing Classes A and B fires. During actuation, wet
chemical is discharged from its cylinder via a hose to a nozzle, or multiple nozzles. Once the
wet chemical is discharged on the fire area, the fire is suppressed.
1-2.5 Notification
The Sentinel SA1 uses an internal buzzer to alert personnel of a potential fire condition. Once
the buzzer is activated, personnel need to employ their preplanned emergency action plan.
Protected areas can be identified by a sign that reads “THIS SPACE PROTECTED BY
ENVIROTECH SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.”
1-2.6 Auxiliary
The auxiliary function of this system provides a means to activate or deactivate other systems
or equipment, such as the vehicle engine, fans and hydraulic lines.
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 is capable of actuating fire suppression systems automatically,
manually, or both.
• Automatic
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 can be actuated using automatic fire detection and control.
• Manual
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 can manually actuate fire suppression systems electrically or
pneumatically.
Note: “Manual Only” systems may be permissible only if acceptable to the authority having
jurisdiction.
Note: FM Global does not allow “manual only” operation.
The Envirotech Sentinel System can be configured to provide both automatic and manual

CHAPTER 2
COMPONENTS
2-1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides a functional and technical description of the equipment and components
used in the Envirotech® Sentinel® SA1 System.
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 System consists of the following major components:
• Control
• Detection
• Actuation
• Electrical
• Notification
• Auxiliary
• Tools
The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 (Sentinel SA1) provides all automatic detection, alarm, and
supervisory functions, and the electrical equipment for transmitting the various signals to the
panel.
The Sentinel SA1 is available with two sources of power. The first source powers the SA1 from
vehicle power (9-32 VDC) using an internal power supply with secondary backup battery. The
backup battery provides power to the SA1 to protect the vehicle for several hours after the
vehicle has been turned off. The battery pack is rated from 32°F to 158°F (0ºC to 70ºC).
Operation outside of this range is not recommended. Refer to Appendix A to determine the
system backup capability.
The SA1 is also available with an isolated internal primary cell battery pack assembly that can
power the unit for up to one year. The primary cell battery pack is rated from -40°F to 158°F
(-40ºC to 70ºC).

The Sentinel SA1 has three user interface switches. They are:
• Silence - Silences the internal buzzers. This user interface switch is also used in
conjunction with the Override user interface switch to enter the configuration mode.
• Override - Resets the Release Delay Timer to the original value and continues counting,
if engaged while in Alarm State. If system has discharged, there is no system override.
• Reset - Clears the alarm condition when circuit alarm condition is no longer present.
Alarm: 60 BPM
Release: Continuous
Supervisory: 30 BPM
Trouble: 15 BPM
The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) powered, initiating circuit for automatic alarms. The maximum
total current draw for the circuit is 180 mA. This circuit is supervised for opens and is power
limited.
The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) initiating circuit for manual alarms. The manual release circuit
can be configured for pneumatic or electric release. If the manual release input has been
configured for pneumatic release, the manual release will not activate the release circuit. If the
manual release input has been configured for electric release, the manual release will activate
the release circuit immediately. In either configuration, a delay to the Alarm Relay may be
selected.
A manual release will disable the Override function. The circuit is supervised for opens.
The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) initiating circuit for supervisory alerts.
The Supervisory Circuit accepts inputs from monitoring devices such as pressure switches on
agent cylinders. The circuit may be used to monitor any quantity of contact closure type
switches, up to the limitation imposed by the wiring resistance.
The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) dedicated controlled output circuit for suppression activation.
Activation of the release circuit can be delayed from 0-60 seconds (in 15-second increments)
in automatic release mode. The release circuit can activate up to three (3) actuators, up to a
maximum cable length of 500 feet, using 18 AWG wire.
The release circuit is supervised for opens and shorts and is power limited.
The Sentinel SA1 has one (1) alarm relay. The relay is normally in the de-energized condition
and will energize upon an alarm. When active, the alarm relay rating is: 30 VDC @ 2A.
Activation of the alarm relay may be delayed from 0-60 seconds (in 15-second increments)
upon a detection alarm, and may be configured to change state only when the system is in
alarm.
Activation of the alarm relay may be delayed from 0-30 seconds (in 15-second increments)
upon a manual release alarm, and may be configured to change state only when the system is
in alarm.
A relay delay cannot be set longer than the release delay. A relay delay can be set shorter
than the release delay. The 15-sec alarm relay delay without override is only available if the
same is first selected for the release delay.
This relay will latch upon activation and shall remain latched until the Sentinel SA1 has been
reset.
The Primary Cell battery provides stand-alone power for the Sentinel SA1. It provides power
for up to one year of stand-by service or one energized release circuit event (metron fired),
whichever occurs first.

Envirotech Sentinel SA1 detection components may include any combination of the following
types of detection:
• Detect-A-Fire® (DAF) detection
• Linear Heat Sensor (LHS) cable
• Infrared detection
The maximum normal ambient temperature for Deutsch connectors is 257ºF (125ºC).
2-4.1 Detect-A-Fire
The Detect-A-Fire (DAF) is a rate-compensated, spot-type, heat detection device that provides
a rapid response to increased temperature. The sensing element consists of an outer shell and
two inner struts with contacts. At normal ambient temperatures, the struts maintain a gap
between the contacts. When the surrounding air is heated to the alarm temperature, the outer
shell expands more rapidly than the inner struts, allowing the contacts to close and signaling
an alarm condition. Upon cooling, the detector will self-restore and may be re-used.
The DAF utilizes Deutsch DTM Series 3-pin connectors for protection against water and wash-
down, and is assembled with one male and one female connector to allow chaining of multiple
detectors on a single circuit. A carbon steel mounting bracket is included with the assembly.

Set Points:
The Envirotech Sentinel Linear Heat Sensor (LHS) Cable Detector is a fixed temperature,
linear-type, heat detection device that provides a normal response to increased temperature.
The detector consists of two parts: the LHS Cable and LHS Base.
The LHS Cable is a small diameter cable, capable of detecting heat from fire over its entire
length. The sensor cable consists of a twisted pair of 19AWG copper-coated steel conductors
covered by a temperature sensitive insulation and protected by a plastic jacket. The heat from
a fire causes the LHS Cable’s special insulation to melt at a specific temperature, allowing the
conductors to short, and signaling an alarm condition. After a fire, the entire length of cable
must be replaced.
See document K-73-201 for additional LHS cable lengths and temperature ratings.

recognize the radiant energy emitted by a fire. It operates by sensing two separate bands of
infrared energy. A fire signal is generated when the sensors see a fire fueled by gasoline,
diesel, hydrogen, oils (including hydraulic), lubricants, CNG, LNG, LPG, methanol, or other
fuels or combustibles. The fire sensor has a 100º solid cone field-of-view.
The fire sensor is immune to false alarms from sunlight, flashlights, lightning, vehicle
headlights, incandescent lights (100 W at 2 inches), and welding arcs (30 inches).
The detector has a green status light in the center of its front surface. The status light
illuminates when the fire sensor is powered and blinks after the detector has responded to a
fire. The blinking will continue until the control panel is reset.
The Infrared Flame Detector utilizes water-resistant construction and Deutsch DTM 3-pin
Series connectors for protection against water and wash-down. It is assembled with one male
and one female connector to allow chaining of multiple detectors on a single circuit.

The Envirotech Sentinel SA1 provides the following options for actuating a suppression system:
• Automatic electrical
• Automatic pneumatic
• Manual electric
• Manual pneumatic
A pneumatic/electric control head is a device that attaches to a cylinder valve, and that
provides a means of opening the valve.
The control head may be operated pneumatically by applying pressure to the actuation port or
electrically by applying a voltage to the attached Actuator Assembly, P/N 83-132500-500. The
control head is used to actuate the Sentinel DCS and the Sentinel LS suppression systems.

The mechanical actuator has a brass body and contains a stainless steel cutter pin assembly
attached to a stainless steel stem which has a knob on the end. The cutter pin can be moved
up and down manually by moving the stem knob up or down.
The actuator bottom opening is threaded to mate with the 15-in3 nitrogen cylinder (P/N WK-
878508-000). The knob and stem are enclosed in a rubber boot to prevent debris from entering
the actuator. To operate the actuator, remove the locking pin and strike the knob toward the
cylinder.
