1. Introduction
The assessment of the geotechnical conditions of the site for the project is necessary to provide
recommendations of the soil characteristics and strength for the foundation system.
The purpose of this Method Statement is to outline the method and sequence of work and highlight the
aspects, which requires special attention of Geotechnical Team during boreholes drilling works.
2. Scope of work
Drilling of Seven (7) boreholes of total 214.00 meters depth for Cut and Cover Tunnel 1, Four (4)
borehole for bridge and Two (2) borehole for overpass based on the Soil Exploration Program. During
drilling of soil-type material, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and soil sampling are to be undertaken at
regular intervals of 1.50m including water table monitoring/recording for each borehole only (Photo 1).
The retrieved soil samples are to be taken to the soil laboratory for the various laboratory tests.

The boreholes shall be drilled at the Client’s Specified/marked locations (See Appendix A Borehole
Location Plan). However, this assumption may change depending on the actual site condition such as
relative areas, height and distance between areas that are to be drilled upon final confirmation from
Client’s representative. (Refer to section 4.8 Item 1 Part 2: Work Requirements below)
Should hard strata or rock formation be encountered, coring will be conducted and samples will be taken.
The drilling process will be terminated then at maximum of 5.00 meters coring depth. Rock Quality
Designation (RQD) shall be determined and other necessary physical properties.
The procedures used in the testing the samples for this project conform to the ASTM Standards. All
samples are subjected to the following specific test (as applicable) done at the laboratory. The test
results are presented and the procedures are briefly described :
3.1. Soil Particles Size Analysis (ASTM D-422, ASTM D-1140/AASHTO T88)
The size and quantity particleas found in particular soil is inidcative of the performance
characteristics of the soil. The percentage by weight of the material passing through each
successive sieve is recorded.
The liquid limit and the plastic test define the upper and lower moisture content points at which a
particular soil ceases to perform as plastic. The use of this test is constrained to cohesive soils.
This test is based on the weight of the water in the soil. It indicattes imperative behavior of different
soil types at various levels of moisture. It is the ratio expresssed as percentage of the weight of
water in a give mass of soil to the weight of solid particles.

Based on the results of visual observations and prescribed laboratory tests, a soil is classified
according to the basic soil groups, assigned a group sysmbol(s) and name. This standard classified
soils from any geographic location into cateegories representing the results of prescribed laboratory
testt to determine the particle-size characteristics, the liquid limit, and the plasticity index
The various groupings of the classification system have benn devised to crrelate in a genenral way
with the engineering behaviour of soils
Preparation and submission of three (3) copies of geotechnical report signed/sealed by our geotechnical
engineer/evaluator which will contain the following:
a. Soil profile, type and classification, SPT N-values and water table location for on-shore
test holes if encountered. Stratification of the area explored is limited through the drilling
depth explored.
b. Discussion on soil stratification and other technical information relevant to the design of
the structural foundation within the area.
c. Evaluation and recommendation of the soil bearing capacity for the different footing
sizes and depths for shallow and deep foundation.
d. Evaluation of site liquefaction potential should the site be susceptible to this
phenomenon.
e. Photos of soil exploration and soil samples per test hole.
