Masterwork Monsters: Bugbear Feats and

Throwbacks
Bugbears are strong, fast and deathly silent.
They are the quiet thugs of the humanoid world,
big enough to stand up to even medium-level
adventurers while still possessing the stealth and
finesse of a creature half their size. Their ursine
features and roguish abilities make them a

skulking strength of the bugbear in mind, while
part two includes a short racial class that can be
used to add a savage regression to the basic
bugbear statistics.

Design Assumptions
The material presented here reflects the following assumptions about bugbears:
Ø Bugbears occupy a unique position among the humanoids, combining the stealth and ambush tactics of
smaller creatures like goblins and kobolds with the raw strength and savagery of humanoids such as orcs and
gnolls. New rules for Bugbears should reflect their unique position.
Ø The role the Bugbear is designed to fill makes them well suited to ambushes and stealth strikes. They excel
at the silent approach followed by a brutal attack, and new abilities should mirror this.
Ø Bugbears represent the upper tier of the savage humanoids, with their Hit Dice and abilities making them a
strong opponent for low-level characters or the servants of a more powerful creature for mid-level
characters. New options and abilities should cater to both these roles.
Ø Bugbears possess the scent ability, several physical traits in common with bears, and their penchant for
stealth means they operate best in light or medium armor. They are more likely to be savage barbarians or
rangers than fighters, and ferocity comes more naturally to them than finesse.
Ø While their great strength makes the bugbear a candidate for feats such as the power attack chain, new feats
that reflect both aspects of the bugbear archetype are needed. Their racial abilities and ability bonuses make
them natural skirmishers rather than militant soldiers.
