    How is it formed
    Come si forma?

    With most verbs, that we call "regular verbs”, past simple is formed by adding –ed

    VERB + -ED

    To call Called

    To watch + Watched

    To want Wanted

    To work Worked
    ?

    Regular Verbs
    But it is not so simple…!
    Some regular verbs change their spelling a bit.
    Here are some examples:
    Ma non è così semplice…!
    Alcuni verbi regolari cambiano leggermente.Ecco alcuni esempi:
    If the verb ends with a vowel and a consonant, the consonant doubles.
    Se il verbo nisce con una vocale seguita da una consonante, la consonante raddoppia.

    If the verb ends with a consonant and the letter y, the letter y changes into a i.
    Se il verbo nisce con una consonante seguita dalla lettera -y, la -y diventa -i.

    Irregular Verbs
    Verbi irregolari
    But there are also irregular verbs in English!
    These verbs, in the past simple tense, don’t follow the
    general rule. Instead, they change their spelling.
    Ma ci sono anche diversi verbi irregolari in inglese!
    Questi verbi, al passato, non seguono la regola generale ma cambiano
    completamente.+

    That’s why you should learn them by heart! :)

    We use did to make questions with the past simple

    DiD + SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB + ?

    Did you play basketball when you were a kid? Giocavi a basket quando da bambino?
    Did your mum cook you dinner yesterday? Tua mamma ti ha cucinato la cena ieri?
    What did she say to him? Cosa gli ha detto? (lei a lui)
    Where did you go on holiday last year? Dove sei andato in vacanza lo scorso anno?
    Negative form

    We use did not or didn’t to make negatives with the past simple

    SUBJECT + DID NOT/DIDN’T + BASE FORM OF THE VERB

    I didn’t play basketball when I was a kid. Non giocavo a basket da bambino.
    My boyfriend didn’t answer the telephone yesterday. Il mio ragazzo non ha risposto al telefono ieri.
    She didn’t do what they told her. Lei non ha fatto ciò che le avevano detto.
    We didn’t go on holiday last year. Non siamo andati in vacanza lo scorso anno.
    When we use it
    Quando si usa?
    We use the past simple tense to talk about:

    🔴 Actions or events that started and nished at a speci c time in the past.
    Azioni o eventi che sono iniziati e niti in un preciso momento del passato.
    🔴 To describe past habits.
    Examples:
    Per parlare di abitudini passate.
    When describing past habits we can also use the expression:
    SUBJECT + USED TO + BASE FORM OF THE VERB
    Per parlare di abitudini passate si usa anche "used to”
    Examples:

    play the guitar when I was younger. Suonavo la chitarra quando ero più giovane.
    My family used to go camping in the 70’s. La mia famiglia andava in campeggio negli anni ’70.

    We often use the past simple with past time expressions:

    Yesterday Ieri
    The day before yesterday L’altro ieri
    A year ago Un anno fa’
    Two/Three/Ten..years ago Due/Tre/Dieci…anni fa’
    Last night La notte scorsa
    Last week La scorsa settimana
    Examples:
    Last month Lo scorso mese
    Last January/February/March… Lo scorso Gennaio/Febbrai/Marzo…
    Last year L’anno scorso
    Last summer L’estate scorsa
    Last Christmas Lo scorso Natale
    Examples: In 2015 Nel 2015
    In the 90’s Negli anni ‘90
