What is a stock form?

Metals are processed into a specific range of standard (or stock) shapes and sizes, which are available from metal suppliers. These shapes and
sizes are those that are the most in demand from the building and manufacturing industry. Metals are not available in every possible shape and
size because it would not be cost effective to make metals in shapes and sizes which few if anyone actually needs. Of course, metal
manufacturers can produce metals in unique sizes and shapes to order, but this is extremely expensive, as it usually means a machine has to be
adjusted to a non-standard setting or even designed and made to make the metal into the required shape/size.
What are the most common shapes available?
• Sheet (called plate when it is thicker i.e approximately 5 to 10mm thick and above)
• Flat strip (narrow sections of sheet metal)
• Wire: round ‘flexible’ material ranging from less than 1mm in diameter to 12mm (or
more in high strength situations such as suspension bridges)
• Rod: round, half round, square, rectangular, octagonal and hexagonal (called bar
when approximately 10mm thick and above)
• Tube: round, square, rectangular.
• A range of different cross-sections: Angle, Channel, T bar, I Beam, etc. This industrial shelving unit is made from
angle section steel. Angle section is stronger
Working with stock forms than flat metal sections. Tubes are even
Designers and engineers will always try to work with standard forms of material, as this is stronger, but much more expensive
the most cost effective approach. For the exam you will need to know the names of these
stock shapes (but you would not be expected to know what sizes they come in).

different stock forms of metals. Label the
shape and explain why you think this shape
has been chosen (see example above)
