Cable Laying Procedure

This document provides guidelines for safely laying cables at compression department locations. It specifies that trenches should be dug at least 1.5 meters deep and 10 cm layers of sand should be used to cover and protect cables. When laying multiple cables, a spacing of 30 cm should be provided between cables. Separate trenches are needed for power and control cables. After cable installation, the trenches should be covered with bricks and soil to prevent mechanical damage to the cables. Safety equipment like glasses, gloves, and protective footwear must be worn during the cable laying process.

CABLE LAYING PROCEDURE Rev #00 28-03-2019

Standard Operating Procedure

1. Purpose
This procedure is devised to provide guidelines for safe

2. Scope
This procedure is applicable at locations of compression department in Compression
electrical.

3. Procedure:

 A trench of about 1.5 meters deep should be excavated. Width of Trench should
be as per number of cable being laid.
 Trench should be covered with a 10 cm thick layer of fine sand.
 The cable must be laid over the sand bed. The sand bed protects the cable from
the moisture from the ground.
 Then the laid cable must be covered with a layer of sand about 10 cm thick.
 When multiple cables are to be laid in the same trench, a horizontal or vertical
spacing of about 30 cm should be provided to reduce the effect of mutual
heating. Spacing between the cables also ensures a fault occurring on one cable
does not damage the adjacent cable.
 Separate trenches need to be used for power and control cables.
 After execution of above mentioned steps, the trench should be covered with
bricks and soil to protect the cable from mechanical injury.

4. Precautions:
Safety glasses must be worn at all times Safety gloves must be worn.
