Let’s calculate the clipping of a 350-
Watt Premium Panel with an IQ7. The
350 Watts
IQ7 has a maximum output of only 250 328 Watts
Watts on a South facing (180 Degree) 250 Watts
roof in Southern California.

78 Watts
What’s the max output of a
350-Watt Panel?

So 328 W – 250 W =

Let’s Do Some Back of the Envelope Math

Let’s zoom into the point of clipping.

When the inverter starts clipping it doesn’t 78
jump up to 78 watts… 56 54

Over the period the inverter clips, the 20
amount varies, peaking at 78 watts…
So estimating 78 watts over the entire
period of clipping isn’t realistic.
Let’s say the average clipping during the
period of clipping…is closer to 50 watts.

Let’s Do Some Back of the Envelope Math
50 Watts X 2 hours
So, when it clips, how many hours a day on = 100 Watt hours (Whs)
average does it clip? 100 Wh X 120 days
So, how many days a year does it clip? = 12,000 Whs

Let’s say a full 4 months… = 12 kilowatt hours (kWh) clipped

Now a how many kWhs would that 350 watt 350 Watts X 5.5 Peak Sun Hours
solar panel produce throughout the whole = 1925 Watt hours….round to.
year? 2 kWh of production per day
So if we take the clipping… 2 kWh X 300 days per year
And divide it by the production…. = 600 kWh of production

We get our percentage of clipping… 12 kWh of clipping / 600 kwh of production

Why do you want ANY clipping?
To maximize system energy on a busbar
• Contractors report that over 50% of the time, PV system size is
constrained by bus bar rating and solar breaker limitations

• By utilizing higher DC:AC ratios, more kWdc can be connected to a


constrained main service panel and overall energy output can be
increased

• Example: 100 A Main Service with 100 A bus bar rating, limits solar
PV breaker to 20 A

• Which will produce more energy?


• 13 x IQ 7+ with 350 W PV Modules (4.55 kW) with 0% clipping or
• 16 x IQ 7 with 350 W PV Modules (5.6 kW) with maybe 2%
clipping in ideal non shaded orientations
(That’s over 20% more energy with the IQ7s!!!)
