Quiz 1 Examination (Spring 2024)
Date: 19th February 2024

Time: 11 : 00 A.M. - 12 : 15 P.M. Max. Marks: 20

1. Consider the three message signals as following: (i) m1 (t) = 2 cos(2π250t); (ii) m2 (t) =
4 cos(2π180t) + 2 cos(2π220t); (iii) m3 (t) = 2 cos(2π2000t) × cos(2π1000t). For each of these
message signals, do the following:
(a) Sketch the magnitude spectrum. (0.5 + 1 + 1)
(b) Sketch the magnitude spectrum of the DSB signal created by multiplying each message
signal with cos(2π10, 000t). (0.5 + 1 + 1)

2. Compute the Hilbert transform of the following signals:

(a) cos(2π300t)
(b) sin(2π500t)
(c) sin(2π300t) + cos(2π500t) (0.5 × 3)

3. The bandwidth of a signal g(t) is W . What is the bandwidth of ĝ(t), the Hilbert transform
of g(t)? (0.5)

4. Let the message signal be m(t) = cos(2π1000t) + sin(2π1000t) and the carrier frequency be
10000 Hz with amplitude be 20 units.
(a) Determine the time domain expression of the lower sideband SSB signal.
(b) Determine the magnitude spectrum of the lower sideband SSB signal. (1.5 × 2)

5. Consider the Costas receiver used to synchronize the LO signal to an incoming pure sinusoidal
signal as shown in the figure below:

(a) Write the signal expressions at the locations designated by ①, ②, and ③. (0.5 × 3)

1
(b) Now consider that the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) supplies cos(2πfc t + π + ϕ)
and sin(2πfc t + π + ϕ) as the local carrier signals instead of the current local carriers
cos(2πfc t + ϕ) and sin(2πfc t + ϕ). Write again the signal expressions at the locations
designated by ①, ②, and ③. (0.5 × 3)
(c) Do you see any difference in the costap loop action for the above-mentioned two phase
error cases (i.e., ϕ and π + ϕ)? Explain/Justify your statement briefly. (1)

6. Consider a Quadrature modulation scheme for carrying two message signals m1 (t) and m2 (t)
simultaneously as shown below:

s(t) = Ac m1 (t) cos(2πfc t) + Ac m2 (t) sin(2πfc t).

At the receiver side, the local oscillator has a fixed phase error ϕ as shown below:

Obtain the output signals (i) g1 (t) and (ii) g2 (t). (2+2)

7. Consider the baseband signal m(t) to be a periodic signal as shown in the Figure below:

Rt
FM signal is generated as 100 cos[200πt+40 −∞ m(τ )dτ ]. Sketch the instantaneous frequency
(in Hz) with respect to time t. (2)
