Video games and Violence

Video games are a pleasant pastime for many people and have multiple different genres

and subgenres. One of these genres are action games which have a subgenre called shooters

which, as the name indicates, are about shooting guns. This has led some people to believe that

there is a connection between gun violence and these kinds of violent video games. While at first

glance this argument may seem reasonable, a deeper dive can reveal a lot more than meets the

eye. Because of the following reasons and evidence there is reason to believe that video games

do not cause violence.

First of all, video games have been the focus of multiple studies in order to find any

connection between them and violence. Highlighted by Robert Preidt of U.S. News, a study that

was published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization revealed that while video

games may cause agitation in children, they do not necessarily cause violence against others.

While some may think that these agitations can eventually build up and result in violence, that is

not the case as shown by Alex Hern of The Guardian who highlighted a study conducted by New

Zealand's Massey University that found "no evidence for such an accumulation, and in fact finds

evidence pointing in the opposite direction". There is even evidence presented by Christopher J.

Ferguson of P.B.S. that shows that new releases of violent video games "correlate with

substantial declines in youth violence - not increases". Outside of studies there are also many

other arguments that can be made as to why video games don't cause violence.

A common argument as to why video games don't cause violence is that there are other

forms of media such as television, movies, and music that depict violence but aren't blamed for

causing violence. Some people say that video games are different since the player is involved in

the violence being shown on screen but in that case why are other video games not blamed for

other crimes? For example, racing games haven't been shown to cause people to begin driving

recklessly and fighting games haven't been shown to cause people to seek out fights. There is

also the fact that there are a lot of people who play video games as shown by a survey conducted

by Statista in December of 2021 that showed that 65% of adults in the United States played

video games in so it's no wonder that there are people who have committed violent acts that have

also played video games. On top of this, another survey conducted by Statista in December of

2011 showed that 75% of people in the United States who played video games mostly played

violent ones which means that it's no surprise that a person who committed a violent act could've

also played violent video games. While the age of the 2011 survey may cause it to lose some

credibility, video games have spread to a much wider audience than before which means that

there are more opportunities for people to play violent video games.

While video games are mostly presented as objects that cause violence there have

actually been shown to be some benefits to playing them.. One of these benefits that is present in

multiplayer video games is that they can increase teamwork skills by having players work

together to reach a common goal which usually involves beating another team. Video games can

also increase critical thinking skills by having puzzles of sorts or encouraging strategizing before

advancing. There are also video games that involve physical activity such as Just Dance which

can make exercising more fun for people to do. One last benefit of playing video games is the

most obvious in that it is stress relieving and can help someone relax after a long day. The point

is that video games can do so much to help people but they are usually only brought up because

of how violent they can be.

At the end of the day, video games do not cause violence but it is also important to

remember that video games should be played every now and then and not as much as possible

since that can be harmful to oneself. Instead of being sources of violence, video games have been

shown multiple times to not have any connections to it at all. On the contrary, video games have

a lot more good than bad if a closer look is taken. However there is one thing to think about and

that is that we need to figure out what the real causes of violence are instead of just blaming

video games because of their imagery.
