Method of Statement

This document provides a method statement for laying thermoplastic road markings. It outlines the requirements for applying white and yellow thermoplastic materials to road surfaces using screed methods to create markings like center lines, edge lines, and directional arrows. The preparation of the site surface and material are described, along with the application process between 180-230°C and post-application reflectorization using glass beads. Thickness requirements are also specified between 2.0-3.0mm for standard markings and 5.0mm for yellow transverse lines.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR THE LAYING OF THERMOPLASTIC ROAD MARKINGS

1.1 Scope

This part specifies the requirements for the application of white and yellow
thermoplastic synthetic resin binder materials, which are melted and applied hot, to
road surfaces using screed methods as thin superimposed markings for centre lines,
edge line, stop lines, chevron hatching, directional arrows and the like.

2.0 Preparation Of Site

Since the thermoplastic material is applied hot, a good bond to the road is normally
obtained on standard bituminous surfaces. Primer not required.

2.1 Concrete And Bituminous Surfaces Where Polished Aggregate Is Exposed

On old concrete and bituminous surface where polished aggregate is exposed, a

concrete primer shall be used. The concrete primer shall be brush applied and left to
cure for five (5) minutes prior to application of thermoplastic material. On new concrete
surfaces, any laitance and / or curing compound shall be removed before the markings
are applied.

2.2 Condition of Surface

The material shall not be laid over loose detritus, mud or similar extraneous matter of
over old flaking markings of paint or thermoplastic material. If the road surface is wet,
it shall be warmed carefully by a road heater so that, when the material is laid, the
surface temperature is above 5 OC and the surface is dry.

3.0 Preparation Of Material On Site

3.1 To avoid discoloration and embrittlement due to heating at a temperature in excess of

that specified by the manufacturer, the material shall be melted in a heater fitted with a
mechanical stirrer to prevent local overheating.
3.2 A thermometer accurate to within + 5 oC at the working temperature of the heater shall
be used during laying to ensure that overheating of the material does not occur.
3.3 Once molten, hydrocarbon resins shall be used within 6 hours. The materials shall not
exceed 230oC application temperature during that time, and shall be discarded after
that time.

4.0 Laying

After transferring to the apparatus, the material shall be laid at a temperature within the
range of 180oC – 230oC for the particular method of laying being used. For places
inaccessible to screed machine, hand application shall be used.

5.0 Reflectorisation By Surface Application

Where surface application of solid glass beads is required, the additional solid glass
beads shall be distributed from the screed machine at a rate of 300 +100 g/m2
concurrently with the laying of the line.

6.0 Thickness

The material shall be laid to the following thickness for synthetic resin binder :-
6.1 Screed lines for white or yellow markings is 2.0 mm-3.0mm
6.2 Screed lines for yellow transverse markings is 5.0 mm
