Where On Earth Is The Philippines?
1
What I Need to
Know
This module was designed to simplify the concepts of demonstrating how
places on earth may be located using a coordinate system (S7ES-Iva-1).
It’s time to talk now about the location of our country, the Philippines. Where
is the Philippines? You may answer, the Philippines is on earth, of course, but where
exactly is it located? In this module, you have to learn a new skill: finding places
using latitude and longitude using a map or globe. After going through this module,
you are expected to:

points to the:
1. positive x-axis
2. positive y-axis D
3. negative x-axis C A
4. negative y-axis B
Activity 2.
Match the terms in column A with the definition in column B.
Column A Column B
1. Latitude a. divides the northern and southern hemisphere
2. Equator b. tells how far a place is from the equator
3. Longitude c. below the equator
4.Northern Hemisphere d. above the equator
5. Southern Hemisphere e. imaginary lines that extend from north to south
What’s New
After performing this activity, you will be able to describe the location of some places in
the Philippines using coordinates of latitude and longitude.

A. Use the above map to answer the following questions. (2 pts each)
1. Which axis in the Cartesian plane represented the longitude?
What is it
Study the image of a globe below. After studying the image on the right, try to define
"equator" in your own words.
The "northern hemisphere" is that part of the world between the North Pole and the
equator is called the "northern hemisphere". The "southern hemisphere" is situated below the
equator. (Science LM 7)
Look closer at the lines of latitude.
The equator is at latitude 00 (zero degrees). At the North Pole, the latitude is 900 N,
and at the South Pole, the latitude is 900S (90 degrees south)
The starting point of the longitude is the Prime Meridian passes through Greenwich,
England. To the Prime Meridian's right, the longitude is written this way: 150E (15 degrees
east), 300W, and so on. To the left of the Prime Meridian, the longitude is written as 150 west
(15 degrees west), and so on. (Science LM 7).
Q3. Using your map, what is the latitude and longitude of Manila?
(2pts)
Now that you know how to describe the location of a particular place using latitude
and longitude. The lines of latitude are parallel to the equator and each other, that is why it
is called parallels of latitude. Five lines of latitude have unique names. The table below
shows the names of each . The latitude values have been rounded off to the nearest half-
degree. (Science LM 7)

00 Equator
23.50N Tropic of Cancer
23.50S Tropic of Capricorn
66.50N Arctic Circle
66.50S Antarctic Circle
Get a globe or world map and find the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of
Capricorn. The part of the map between the two is called the tropics, and the Philippines
is part of this region.
Now, look for the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle on the globe or map.
Between the Tropic of Cancer down to the Arctic Circle is the northern temperate zone; while
places between the Tropic of Capricorn to that in the Antarctic Circle is the southern
temperate zone. Places or Countries in these zones go through the four seasons-winter,
spring, summer, and autumn.
Finally, the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle areas are called the polar regions or
frigid zones.
To sum up, the closer the latitude of the place to the equator, the warmer the climate
of that region or place. The closer it's latitude to the poles, the colder the place or region.
Thus, there is a relationship between the latitude of a place and the climate it experiences.

Activity 4: Where in the World Is the Philippines? (Part 2)
How well do you know the physical features of the Philippines? In this activity, you
must get acquainted with its surrounding bodies of water and landmasses.
Objective
After performing this activity, you will be able to describe the Philippines' location
relative to the surrounding landmasses and bodies of water.
Materials
Globe and world map
What to do
Using a globe or a world map as a reference, label the blank map below. Your
labeled map should include the following:
Q1. Which bodies of water in the list are found to the west of the Philippines? (2 pts)
Q2. Which body of water in the list is located to the east of the Philippines? (2 pts)
Q3. Which large body of water is found to the north of the Philippines? (2 pts)
Q4. Encircle the Philippines on the map above. (2 pts)
Q5. Why is the Philippines called an archipelago? (2 pts)
Now you know the surrounding bodies of water and landmasses of our country.
It is a part of Southeast Asia, bounded in the north by the Bashi Channel,
east by the Pacific Ocean, west by the West Philippine Sea ( formerly the
South China Sea ), and in the south the Celebes Sea.
