THE CHALLENGES OF BEING AN ATHLETE WHEN IT COMES TO TIME MANAGEMENT IN
HUMSS GRADE 11 STUDENT OF CAINTA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Chapter 1

Introduction

Balancing academics and athletics is a prominent challenge faced by student-

athletes globally, and this holds particularly true for the Grade 11 Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMMS) students at Cainta Senior High School. The dual
commitment to educational excellence and athletic prowess demands exceptional
time management skills, often leading to a unique set of challenges that can
significantly impact a student's high school experience.

In the context of Cainta Senior High School, the HUMMS strand provides a
curriculum focused on human studies and the liberal arts, areas that demand deep
intellectual engagement and critical thinking. When combined with the rigorous
training schedules and competitions that athletes must attend, the pressure to excel
on both fronts can be overwhelming. This study aims to explore the specific time
management challenges encountered by these student-athletes, shedding light on
how they navigate their dual commitments and the strategies they employ to
maintain their academic standing while excelling in their chosen sports.

The significance of time management for student-athletes cannot be overstated.

Research indicates that effective time management is crucial for academic
achievement, mental and physical health, and overall well-being (Zimmerman &
Kitsantas, 2005). Moreover, student-athletes who excel in time management are
found to experience lower stress levels and higher satisfaction with their student-
athlete experience (Gould & Whitley, 2009). Therefore, understanding the time
management challenges specific to HUMMS Grade 11 student-athletes at Cainta
Senior High School can provide valuable insights into the supports and interventions
that can facilitate their success in both academic and athletic domains.

This study adopts a qualitative research approach, engaging with the lived
experiences of student-athletes through interviews, focus groups, and observations.
By delving into the personal narratives of these individuals, the research aims to
capture the nuanced ways in which time management challenges manifest and are
addressed within the unique context of Cainta Senior High School, offering a
grounded perspective that can inform future educational policies and practices.
