1.

2. Reflect on the scenarios presented in the game. Was there anything that surprised you?

Anything you found particularly difficult?

Planet Jockey is a leadership simulation game that takes you through various

scenarios that allow for the opportunity to work on leadership skills. The first level of

Planet Jockey is "How to create a high-performing team," which specifically focuses on

communication and emotional intelligence (EI Games). While working through each

scenario provides a challenge that allows the leader to identify the best communication

method while ensuring that you communicate with the right emotional intelligence set. In

our reading, we learned that a leader's essential skills in communication and doing so

with a high level of emotional intelligence (Johnson & Hackman, 2018). I was surprised

to find that it is essential to meet with new team members individually, then meet at a

group level. At the end of the scenario, it did make sense that it is essential first to gain a

connection with an individual, establish a level of trust, and connect on a group level.

Another scenario that surprised me was that meetings should be kept to a minimum of

two people with a maximum of eight people, preferably six people. I thought at first that

it was a trick question and was confused. How was I supposed to know the correct

answer? I believed that each person in the meeting should count and that each person's

opinion should matter. However, it made more sense that people can create ideas more

productively in smaller groups. What I found to be particularly difficult was the debate

scenario and how to manage conflict. As a leader, I understand that conflict is normal, but

I am not particularly good at managing conflict and deflecting conflict to be constructive.

After completing the "debate" scenario, I was able to grasp more knowledge on how

conflict is essential to a group setting. Allowing and knowing that conflict will happen

enables each individual to find their position and place within the group (EI Games,

2019). It is up to the leader to mitigate the conflict and ensure that each person is heard

and guided.

3. Explain how something you learned in the game connects to something you learned

from the text.

While working my way through the various scenarios of level one, I connected

the importance of emotional intelligence and how it is essential when communicating. In

both chapters of our readings, it focused mainly on the importance of communication and

how it shapes you as a leader (Johnson & Hackman, 2018). One of the essential skills to

ensure success is communication, and it is needed to guide your team, build trust, show

value towards your team, and create a connection. How you communicate is also an

important aspect. Working on the debate scenario portrayed the importance of how to

lead with the understanding of emotions. During the game, one scenario connected

communication and emotional intelligence during the "debate" scenario. In this particular

scenario, conflict occurred when voices began to rise while team members discussed the

budget. As a leader, it is essential to allow for this conflict to happen and guide it to be

productive and effective.

4. How could you use the concepts discussed in this simulation in your job today? Give

an example of a situation you’ve been in where you could use a concept from the

simulation.

In my current role today, I can utilize emotional intelligence to allow me to

become a more effective communicator. Emotional intelligence will allow me to become

a better communicator by becoming aware of how others may react, how I may respond,

how I guide others, and how I am working with others. Leaders who have a grasp on

emotional communication can attend to others' emotions, express emotions, regulate

emotions, and even turn feeling into a way of thinking (Johnson & Hackman, 2018). A

previous situation that I have been in that would allow me to utilize the concepts in our

lesson is when a new team member is has started working. I can ensure that I connect

with the new individual before allowing them to communicate with the group first. As I

learned in level one, it is essential to establish an individual connection first and connect.

It will allow me to establish trust, fellowship, and engagement (EI Games). Establishing a

relationship is not something I do immediately; instead, new employees connect with

groups first and then connect individually. I was not aware of the impact that this may

have on new team members. By connecting first, I build a connection.
