According to me, the Tomb of Iltutmish is a really fascinating. Historically built as a magnificent
building, it is a tribute to the dead for their accomplishments during their lives. However, it also
captures an essence of the past, the present and the future, within its walls.
Upon a closer look, the tomb, which once was celebrated as an architectural wonder for
someone significant, now is dotted with wild weeds, vegetation and a whole new ecosystem of
life which calls it a home. Lined along its walls are words written in a language of past, not
widely understood by the people today, yet recognized as a symbol of our shared history. If we
are to believe the scriptures, they foretell a day of judgment when the deceased will rise to face
divine evaluation and get their rewards as per their deeds. This truly completes a cyclical
journey through time, spanning generations and imbuing the tomb with a significance that
transcends mere burial grounds.
There is also really interesting play of time that occurs between the viewer and the person
resting in the tomb. From the viewer's perspective, the time is frozen in the past, when this
magnificent structure was erected and is a good reference of the past, about the people who
lived, how they lived and where they lived. Whereas, from the point of view of the deceased, the
time flies by him as he wonders how the people around him have changed, people from various
ethenic groups, beliefs and lifestyles visit his final resting spot, coming in from far and near.
There is nothing he can do to experience this changing future, yet the present experiences the
past in all its glory.
