GlobalProtect VPN Access for UFS Staff


GlobalProtect VPN Access for UFS Staff 4. Once logged in, you will be directed to a webpage requesting that you enter either a DUO passcode or

For this demonstration, we will be making use of the Duo Push authentication method. Therefore, you
can enter the number 1 in the open textbox and then click on the LOG IN button.
The access.ufs.ac.za portal is your gateway to accessing UFS resources for free when working from home.
However, first, you will need to complete some pre-requisite steps enable this service.

Step 1 01
We will be making use of DUO multi-factor authentication (a extra security measure the UFS has put in
place to protect your account from unathorized access).

you with the installation. This will only take about 5 minutes.

Now you will connect to the UFS GlobalProtect VPN. You can launch GlobalProtect by clicking on Start and then
on GlobalProtect.
1. Type in access.ufs.ac.za when it prompts you for a portal.

or have other questions regarding this VPN service.

2. Enter your UFS username and password and click on Sign In.

3. Authentic.ate via Duo, by either choosing to receive a Push request (1) or by entering your Duo passcode.
Once completed click on OK.
Frequently Asked Questions
•• How does it work?
As long as your GlobalProtect Client shows a ‘connected’ status, you will be able to access the listed resources
for free. Once you have completed your academic activity, you can click on the ‘disconnect’ button. You
will find that only the resources listed below are available once connected to GlobalProtect. To carry on with
your personal browsing, please disconnect from GlobalProtect.

•• What can I access with GlobalProtect:


The following academic websites are available through reversed billing for UFS staff members:

•• Select cloud services such as SolveIT – ServiceNow, Blackboard and Office365

•• Who can make use of this service?


You have to be a staff member at the University of the Free State. You will be required to log in with your UFS
username and password.
This service is available to staff that have Vodacom, MTN, CellC, or Telkom Mobile 3G or LTE coverage, even
if you have a zero balance on your SIM card.

•• I have no Vodacom, MTN, CellC or Telkom Mobile coverage where I live?


There is a good chance that one of these providers has coverage in your area. If this is the case, you may
want to consider getting a secondary SIM card to allow you to make use of the noted service. Please contact
the ICT Service Desk if you need assistance.

•• Do I need a new SIM card or can I use my existing number?


You can make use of your current mobile number and device. You can, however, opt to get a different SIM
card if you prefer to do so. Please keep in mind that it may be challenging to find an open cellular store
during “lockdown”, which means that you might not be able to complete the necessary RICA process. We
recommend that you use an existing SIM instead to stay within the rules of the COVID-19 lockdown.

•• Do I need to use this if I have my own internet?


You can make use of your existing internet connection if you prefer to do so. This service is not mandatory;
it is a service to assist any staff members that do not have data readily available.
