1. SECTION A: INTRODUCTION

WELCOME

Welcome to CEE317B Chemical Engineering Design I: Equipment. This is a semester module, which
represents advanced knowledge in field of Equipment Design for chemical plant operation. It is offered
via compulsory lectures over 13 weeks. The course is structured in such a way as to provide a sound
foundation for application of process design principles in Chemical Engineering. We trust you will enjoy
the course, and find it interesting and informative. Good knowledge of physics, chemistry and
mathematics is the requirement for the course. Please note that not all the work can be covered during
lectures and therefore it is expected of the student to do extra work on his/her own time. Extra work and
assignments will be given and you need to make use of the internet as well as the library with the
assistance of the librarian to do these assignments.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This study guide provides you with all the essential information on this programme. Section A serves as
an introduction and Section B addresses organisational matters. Section C indicates the prescribed and
recommended resources for this module. Section D addresses the learning programme itself and
provides you with amongst others the programme overview, outcomes and references to the text book to
enable you to do the required self-study and preparation for lecturers Section C provides an overview of
the assessment requirements for this module to enable you to prepare for assessments and complete
assignments and other work according requirements. You are required to familiarise yourself with the
content in this study to ensure you are aware of the requirements and expectations.

1.1 PURPOSE OF THIS MODULE/SUBJECT

The purpose of the module is to develop your design skills in chemical industry. On successful
completion of this module you will have developed your knowledge and skills regarding equipment sizing
and costing, understanding of non-linear equilibrium thermodynamic models, separation of Azeotropic
mixtures, and development of heat exchanger networks.

Before design of the whole plant, students will learn how to design chemical reactors (first part of any
chemical process) and how to design separators for product mixture separation (second part of any
chemical process). In this module the emphasis is placed on distillation equipment design, because
distillation is most expensive equipment in a chemical plant. The revision of binary mixture distillation will
be done, and then the shortcut (Fenske equation) and rigorous methods (MESH equation solution in
process simulator) for calculation of multicomponent mixture distillation will be introduced. The student will
understand the thermodynamics of separations, and also consider heat integration in chemical plant and
economic evaluation of chemical plant profitability. The student will learn how to implement all phases of
separation equipment design, starting from thermodynamic model selection through mass and energy
balance calculations to final economic evaluation. This knowledge will allow improving of economic
efficiency and therefore competitiveness of a company. This module will give students a broad insight into
knowledge needed by an engineer to address manufacturing and design tasks as well as operational
issues.

4.2 SUBMISSION AND FORMAT OF REPORTS AND RUBRICS WITH EVERY

ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/PRACTICAL

A brief summary of the assignments are included below.

All assignments/reports and simulation models must be submitted in electronic form on D2L!!! By each
student individually.

All reports must comply with at least the basics of a technical report. Submit all reports as if it is a report to
an employer or project manager. Therefore, the format will be at least as follows:

• Cover page

• Table of content

• Introduction to the assignment or practical

• Detailed information on work done

• Summary

• List of references
Page 8
Study Guide Chemical process Design: Equipment design IV– 2021

• Font: Arial

• Font size: 12 points

• Line spacing: 1,5

• Margins: 25 mm

A template will be available on D2L that is formatted correctly to the above-mentioned format. Download
this template and use it as is.

Important!!!

1) Information that is Cut and Paste from the internet will be marked negatively as it does not
indicate that the student understand the relevant work.

2) Reports must be submitted through D2L.

On completion of the report, before submitting the report, rename the template to a name according to
the example below. For example:

• Ass1_204359761_MASHEGO.doc – This is assignment 1 of student Mashego, student
