Tele-Medicine for a better Healthcare

Introduction: Tele-medicine in one of the branches of modern healthcare, which is providing many
benefits to patients and doctors.
PRE-READING
Instructions: Based on the image below, write a short definition of the term “Tele-Medicine”. Use
your own words.

READING

Instructions: Read the text and answer the questions below.

In the past, if you lived in a rural area, you
couldn’t always count on having access to the
most modern health care. Many people with
treatable conditions died because they were too
far from health centers, or because their
doctors weren’t trained in the latest techniques.
Today, the development of “tele-medicine,” or
tele-health, is changing that situation for the
better.
Telemedicine makes improved health care possible in a number of different ways. First, technology
such as videoconferencing and streaming video makes it possible for health care professionals to
receive training from experts who are thousands of kilometers away. These technologies can also be
used to provide patients with health education, which permits them to manage their own care.
Being able to access specialists, such as cancer specialists or eye doctors, via tele-medicine
technology means that small hospitals do not need to have these medical professionals on staff. This
saves money; it also means that patients do not have to travel long distances to receive treatment. In
addition, doctors can monitor some patients with diseases in their homes, using mobile devices and
apps that send their information over the Internet.
Of course, telemedicine isn’t free. Hospitals, doctors, and patients need to have the devices and
technology they need in order to be connected to health care providers at a distance. The good news
is that there is often support available from governments or other organizations that can provide the
resources that are needed to bring health care to even the most distant rural area.

Instructions: Choose the best answer for each question.

1. According to the article, what often happened in the past to people living in rural
areas if they got sick?

a. They died from their illnesses.

b. They got medical advice through their relatives.
c. They moved to the city.

2. What is another way to say "tele-medicine"?

a. medical training
b. tele-health
c. specialized medicine

3. Why are patients able to monitor their health better with tele-medicine?

a. They can speak to other patients with the same condition.

b. They can get transportation to a hospital.
c. They can get health advice and information even if they live far away.

4. How can doctors get advanced training using tele-medicine?

a. They can work on patients with rare medical conditions.

b. They can participate in videoconferences.
c. They can access a variety of medical resources.

5. How do hospitals in small towns save money as a result of using tele-medicine

technology?

a. They can build smaller buildings.

b. They don't need to have specialist doctors on staff.
c. They can see fewer patients every year
6. How could a doctor monitor a patient using tele-medicine?

a. by talking to other doctors who have similar patients

b. by using an app that sends patient data
c. by using the Internet to make a phone call to the patient

7. What does a community need to invest in if they want to have a tele-medicine

program?

a. special devices and technology

b. medical research facilities
c. skilled doctors and nurses

8. Where is it possible to find money to start a tele-medicine program?

a. the government and other organizations

b. the patients and their families
c. technology companies

9. What is the main challenge to implement telemedicine in hospitals?

a. Doctors training
b. Funds to have the right technology
c. Patients do not like online services

10. What is the purpose of the text? Why?

a. Inform the reader about how telemedicine works

b. Entertain the reader with fun facts about tele-medicine
c. Persuade the reader that tele-medicine is something positive

LESSON D

INFERRING ATTITUD AND TONE

What is “Tone”?
Tone is the author’s attitude toward the topic.
The author’s attitude is expressed through the words and details he or she uses in the text.
Does the text sound optimistic, bitter, tolerant, sentimental or humorous?

You can also infer what an author means by analyzing the feelings and emotions he or she tries to evoke
with the examples used.
How does the text make you feel? Does the author seem to intend you to feel a certain way?

Why is it important to infer the author´s tone?

Because that way it will be easier to understand the author´s motivations and intentions so we can be
critical readers.
Can you infer what the real purpose of the author is about based on his/her tone?

*See the inferring tone ppt and do the exercises on it.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
READING

Instructions: Read the text and complete the exercises

below

1 One of the most important things that are happening in our

hospitals now is the incorporation of AI technologies in the
healthcare system. By including innovative technologies in
the care of all patients, a number of benefits have been created as a result.
2 The most important thing that has been put to use have to be robot-assisted surgeries. In traditional
medicine in order to perform an operation, the doctor has to have very steady hands, be able to be
very precise and also manage to stay standing for hours, especially when an operation is very
difficult and high-risk. On top of that, the doctors can stay in a much more comfortable position
during the operation.
3 Surgery-assisting robots have really changed the way operations are being done. From gastric
bypass surgeries to heart ones, these AI robots can really change the way the medical practitioners
operate. Not only do they have a much clearer view of the area they are operating on, they are also a
lot more precise thanks to the robotic tools.
4 In addition to these perks, some operations can now be completely done by robots working
remotely. This can be a great help to the medical personnel, and it can also create more open spots
for patients in urgent care who really need to be operated on. These elements truly help reduce the
risk of surgeries, making them more accessible to patients. Along with that, they can also
drastically reduce the healing time after the operation and make the overall experience a lot more
pleasant for the patient.
5 Along with that, there are also new systems and devices installed in the hospitals which aid the
medical practitioners when it comes to making a diagnosis. They are much simpler to use and
monitor the patients in a much more effective way. From new scanning devices to tools which help
with drug administration, the hospital experience had become a lot more pleasant for both the
personnel and the patients involved.

Gene Editing: Shaping Our Genetic Destiny

READING
Introduction: Genetic editing refers to the process of
making precise changes to a person´s DNA looking for
curing rare diseases.
WARM UP
Take a look at the following pictures and discuss with the
person next you what you think it can be done with gene editing:

1-They can modify babies´ eyes color 2- 3-

Instructions: Read the text and answer the questions below.

Gene editing, a powerful technology, gives scientists the ability to make changes to our genes, the instructions
that shape who we are. While holding promise for treating genetic diseases, it also prompts questions about
the ethical and potential consequences of altering our genetic code.
Gene editing offers hope for treating genetic diseases, allowing scientists to correct faulty genes that cause
illnesses. This technology could potentially provide cures for untreatable conditions. It envisions a future
where inherited disorders might be addressed before birth, offering the possibility of healthier generations.

Alex Jones, a young boy born with a rare genetic disorder that affected his ability to move and communicate.
His symptoms were challenging, impacting his daily life and restricting his interactions with the world. His
doctors used gene editing, an innovative technique to modify the specific gene responsible for Alex's
condition.

The results were remarkable. Following the gene editing procedure, Alex showed significant improvements in
his mobility and communication skills. He started to walk slowly and say his first words. His quality of life
saw a remarkable transformation. No longer confined by the limitations of his genetic disorder, Alex could
engage more fully with the world around him. Now he is considering to go to school and make new friends.

However, as promising as gene editing is, it raises ethical concerns and potential risks. Some worry about
unintended consequences or the possibility of creating designer babies with artificial traits. Nobody knows
about the long-term effects of gene editing on future generations, so this topic needs deep discussion in our
society.

1. What is gene editing and what is its potential?

2. Who is Alex, and what were his symptoms?

3. How did gene editing impact Alex's quality of life?

4. What are some concerns mentioned about gene editing?

WRITING
Instructions: Write your opinion in our group.
What is your opinion about gene editing? Agree or disagree and why?

VOCABULARY BUILDING

1- Advancements in understanding ______________ traits help researchers to develop new

technologies that can identify more effective healthcare strategies.
2- The ability to precisely _________the genes of individuals and change their _______, opens new
opportunities for developing treatments and therapies for rare diseases.
