Greatest Inventions
At AllAboutInventions this week, we want to know what our readers think are the greatest inventions in
history and why.
Posted by Aaron Park Personally, I believe one of the greatest modern inventions is the idea of recycling
and all the machines that go along with it to recycle material like plastic and glass. Sometimes, I think too
many devices have been invented over the years. For example, if all our gadgets hadn’t been invented,
landfills wouldn’t be packed with them! But recycling is a huge help, and different ways to recycle even
more items are going to be invented in the future. In 100 years, I believe ways to recycle every man-made
product will have been designed.
Posted by Farah Karim I think the greatest invention doesn’t even exist yet, but it surely will in the future.
Genetic engineering will be used to turn waste into usable and useful products. For instance, waste
products might be turned into fuel by using genetically engineered bacteria. It would be an amazing
accomplishment if this were to happen. Our environment would be less polluted, and communities would be
far healthier.
Posted by Silvia Valdez In my opinion, the telephone is the best invention in history. If it hadn’t been
invented, the smartphone wouldn’t have been developed. And I use my phone for everything—
communicating with friends, getting directions to unfamiliar places, and searching for information online. I
can’t imagine getting through the day without it. Of course, the smart phone wouldn’t have been made if
computers hadn’t been invented. And you could say the same about electricity! I guess a lot of inventions
had to happen in order for us to have phones that we can take with us anywhere. I just hope that we find
better ways to recycle our smart phones as Aaron posted.
Posted by Ralph Lockhart This is going way back, but I think the greatest invention is the wheel. As result
of this extraordinary invention, we have vehicles for transportation, like bikes, cars, and trucks. Even
airplanes need wheels for takeoff and landing. Because of these vehicles, we can do so many things—visit
friends and acquaintances, mail packages around the world, get food from farms to grocery stores, and
that’s just scratching the surface! An interesting note is that the first wheels weren’t even used for
transportation, but were used to make pottery. And the pottery wheel led to people making bowls, vases,
plates, and things like that. The wheel did really change people’s lives for the better.
Posted by Kate Mackey I'm going back in time, like Ralph, to say that books are the best invention. I just
love to read, and we can learn so much from books. Imagine that before books, stories and information
were passed on by word of mouth. After the invention of books, information could be shared in a new way,
which brought people of the world closer in a way. Paper, the alphabet, and things to write with are equally
Posted by Derek Williams Two of the most important things that affected the world are the discovery of
electricity and the invention of the light bulb. Of course, the light bulb wouldn’t have even worked if
electricity hadn’t already been discovered. The light bulb made it possible for people to work, socialize, and
travel safely at night and has allowed stores to be open longer as well. Many other inventions work because
of electricity, and most of these inventions have made life easier in some way. A case in point is that before
we had electric mixers, people had to stir everything by hand. In fact, almost everything we use in the
kitchen now needs electricity. And our electronics, as the name implies, depend on electricity as well. If it
hadn’t been discovered, I wouldn’t be typing this post right now!
28. Before this invention, people used wood to heat their ovens. _____
29. I predict that in 25 years, cars will be powered by gas made from biologically-altered waste. _____
30. It’s allowed us to speak with people in our towns and around the world. _____
31. The creation of centers where people can take waste has made it practical. _____
32. Before this invention, animals were often used to transport things from place to place. _____
Part 2
Imagine you and a friend are talking about the advantages and disadvantages of one of
the technologies below. Choose the topic and make up a conversation. Discuss the
advantages, and have your friend talk about the disadvantages. Your conversation
should be two to three minutes.
• Artificial intelligence
• Genetic engineering
