b). How do we know this is a positive test for this organic substance? (1)

c). Why is the leaf boil in water first. (1)

d). What have you observed about the leaf after it has been boiled? (1)

e). Why is it necessary to boil the leaf in alcohol? (1)

f). What is the appearance of the leaf after it has been boiled in alcohol? (1)

g). Explain why the leaf needs to be rinsed with water. (2)

h). Give an investigative question for this experiment? (2)

1.1.4 test tube√
1.1.5 tripod √ (5)

1.2.a starch

1.2b The leaf turned blue/black colour (1)

1.2.c Soften the tissue/ Break down the cuticle√ (1)

1.2.d the leaf is soft/floppy √ (1)

1.2.e to dissolve/extract the chlorophyll √ (1)

1.2.f the leaf loses its colour/becomes white √ (1)

1.2.g To remove any chemical residue/ to rehydrate / give water back to the leaf√ √ (2)

1.2.h How does sunlight affect the production of starch during photosynthesis? √√ (2)

1.2.i Sunlight is needed√ in order for the plant to photosynthesise√ thus allowing the plant to
produce starch√ (3)

1.3

1.4 The test for starch (2)

QUESTION 2

2.1.1 mouth √

2.1.2 straw √

2.1.3 test tube √

2.1.4 clear limewater √ (4)

2.2 The test for carbon dioxide √ (2)

2.3 Variables: Independent variable: the limewater in the test tube √
Dependent variable: carbon dioxide produced √
Controlled variable: Same limewater, same method √ (3)
Hypothesis: When air is blown through the lime water√ bubbles will formed
clear lime water will become milky √ (2)

Conclusion: The air blown into the clear lime water will make the lime
water milky√ and this shows that carbon dioxide is present.√√ (3)
