Introduction
Diavel represents a turning point in the history of Ducati, the new maintenance plan is aligned with
that of MTS 1200 (valve clearance inspection every 24,000 km) and is the result of major design
efforts.
The main news concerning the maintenance schedule regard display modes for customers on the new
instrument panel and the Service calculation and reset strategies (which are more practical and
resemble premium cars products).
It is very important that the maintenance plan is respected by the entire Ducati Service network,
using your respective labour rates for the times given for the three types of services, so we rely
on your cooperation.
To improve costs of maintenance estimations, in addition to the data reported in this document, within
April 2011 we will make available on the You-Tech platform a new Transparent Maintenance
functionality.
In the first version you will find Diavel ABS, which will then be upgraded with contents regarding all
the other models.
This new program allows the identification of a correct maintenance intervention with all labour and
spare parts details required for the operation.
It will also be possible to add other operations not included in the service, such as final drive kit
installation, tyres or brake pads replacement.
This will create a spare parts and operations list with a clear and transparent estimate which, if
accepted by the Customer, can be exported into the “DMS” Dealer Management System to create the
final work order (depending on the system used).
The operations list can be printed for the workshop as a work sheet and for the Customer to know the
operations performed on the bike.
Three types of service have been developed for Diavel, which are here described including the
operations to perform for each one of them:
Note: every time the instrument panel is on, the red indication activates for 10 seconds in a “big”
format, then it remains visible in a small format until “reset”.
On the Diavel instrument panel on tank there is a function which indicates when the vehicle is about to
get to the mileage at which it is necessary to go to a Ducati Authorised Workshop for a preventive
general maintenance. As before, this indication can be reset using the DDS once it has been displayed.
Note: After resetting the first OIL SERVICE warning (triggered at 1000 Km/ 600 miles), upon every
Key-On the system displays the indication of which type of service should be performed next (OIL
SERVICE or DESMO SERVICE) and the residual range.
The indication (green) is active for 2 seconds at each Key-On; when there are 1000 Km left before
reaching the threshold, the (amber yellow) indication is active for 5 seconds at each Key-On.
Caution: This message can only be reset by the Ducati Dealer or Authorised Service Centre that
performs the maintenance.
Caution: the indication reset can only be done with DDS by a Dealer or by a Ducati Authorised
Workshop where maintenance will be performed.
This function allows the activation of the PIN CODE useful to start the vehicle if the Hands Free
system fails.
To enter this function, display Setting menu, select “PIN CODE” and press the turn indicator cancel
button “D”.
Note: If "MODIFY PIN CODE" appears when accessing this function, this means that there is already
a stored PIN and therefore the function is already active.
When entering this function “INSERT NEW PIN CODE” and four dashes “ - - - - “ highlighted in
green are displayed. Now enter the 4-digit code.
To memorize the inserted PIN press “D” for 3 seconds with “MEMORY” highlighted in green.
As a confirmation of PIN storage, the display will show the message “MEMORIZED” for about 2
seconds and then automatically highlight “EXIT” option.
From this moment, “MODIFY PIN CODE” will be displayed when accessing the “PIN CODE”
function and the PIN can be changed again as many times as necessary (without limits).
To exit this function press the turn indicator cancel button “D”.
This function turns on the motorcycle "temporarily" in the case of HF (Hands Free) system
"malfunctions".
To activate the function, press the "emergency" Hands Free button if the motorcycle cannot be turned
on using the normal starter button.
After pressing the button, the instrument panel activates the “INSERT PIN CODE” indication on the
display with four dashes “----” in the bottom line highlighted in green to enter the 4-digit PIN code.
If the code is incorrect, the instrument panel will return to the four dashes “ - - - - “ indication in order
to enter the code again.
Note: it is possible to repeat the operation countless times; however the instrument panel
automatically turns off after 120 seconds.
If the entered code was correctly, the message “CORRECT” will be displayed for 3 seconds.
After 3 seconds, the instrument panel will return to the "normal" view (with all indications active).
From this moment, the vehicle can be started using the Start button.
Note: start is allowed until the vehicle's next Key-Off; repeat the operation from the beginning to
“temporarily” start the bike if the problem persists.
Note: If this procedure is necessary in order to start the vehicle, contact an Authorised Ducati Service
Centre as soon as possible to fix the problem.
Note: If “INSERT NEW PIN CODE” and the dashes “- - - -” appear when accessing this function, this
means that the function is not active as the PIN CODE was never entered. Enter the PIN CODE as
described in “PIN CODE activation“.
When entering this function “MODIFY PIN CODE”; “OLD PIN” and four dashes “ - - - - “
highlighted in green are displayed. Now enter the 4-digit code.
Note: To change the PIN, you must know the currently stored PIN.
If the entered code is incorrect, the instrument panel will return to the four dashes “ - - - - “ in order to
enter the code again.
If entered code is correct, the green message “CORRECT” is displayed for about 2 seconds and then
four dashes “ - - - - “ are highlighted next to “NEW PIN”; now it is possible to enter the “new” 4-digit
code.
Note: There is no limit to the amount of times you can change your PIN CODE.
The battery is in the electrical parts support, remove the left belly fairing to access.
Place the ABS system positive cable (1) on the battery positive terminal (3) and snug the screw (2) on
them.
Connect the positive cable (3), previously assembled to ABS cable (1), to battery positive terminal,
and negative cable (4) to battery negative terminal, by starting the other screw (2) in its thread.
Tighten the terminal clamp screws (2) to a torque of 5 Nm ±10% and apply SHELL Retinax HD2
grease onto the screws and battery terminals to prevent oxidation.
Reposition the battery (5) in the support, positioning the cables (3) and (1) as shown.
Refit battery mounting cover (6) and fasten tightening the screws (7) to a torque of 10 Nm ±10%.
Operations in bold are additional to normal service. If done, these should follow
labour hours mentioned in the flat rate tables on page 24.

mentioned in the flat rate tables on page 24.
Make the rear wheel turn until you find the position where chain is tightest.
Set the vehicle on the side stand. Push down the chain at the point of measurement and release.
Measure the distance between the “aperture” upper profile and pin centre.
Such distance must be: 9 ÷ 11 mm.
Note: If the drive chain is too tight or too slack, adjust it so that tension reading will fall within
specified range.
