LESSON 4: MANAGING INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

Effective classroom organization and management includes efficient use of


instructional time. Establishing routines, participating in group activities, working on
independent tasks, and other essential classroom activities all involve time
management. Setting priorities and structuring the day around the most important tasks
is the first step in managing time in the classroom. Setting priorities can assist teachers
in completing their daily objectives, even when unexpected events arise.

Instructional time
It is the period of time during which students receive instruction from a teacher
and that the school is accountable for them. It encompasses classroom activities during
regularly scheduled time when students are expected to be actively engaged in a
learning activity. In most cases, educational policies or regulations specify the
instructional lime.

Schedule for a multigrade class may differ from that of a monograde class. It
should take into account the students varied needs and capabilities as well as the
teacher's experience and expertise Therefore, a multigrade teacher needs to be
knowledgeable on timetabling.
A timetable is a relevant tool to manage time and organize resources in a
multigrade timetable, usually, a subject is scheduled at the same time for the entire
class, however separate groups may be working in different things within that time.

Guidelines in making a timetable.


 Determine how much stational time is available each day. To do this, what the
sectional time (routines, transitions, socializing) from the amount of time students
are in school.
(allotted time) - (non-instructional time) = (structural time)

 Specify the subjects so he taught as well as their competencies for each grade
level in set forth by the Department of Education

 Determine how much time is required for each subject per week.

 Identify the available resources and teaching strategies needed for each subject.
In a multigrade school the teacher will have to teach two or more-year grades.
Sometimes the teacher needs to teach all the children in the school especially if it is one
teacher school in a remote area. Therefore, in this cases we need to arrange the
timetable, so that we can teach all the grade level or the grade that we are handling
according to their needs.

Two common timetabling approaches that can be utilized in a multigrade class.

1. Split timetable or subject stagger


- in a multigrade class, each grade level studies different subjects simultaneously. The
teacher prepares different lessons and teaches the group in turn.
In this cases of multi grade classes, the multi grade teachers needs to teach a different
subject in a given time for example, that is from 9:00 am to 9:45am if three grades are
involved Grade 1 will do a Mathematics, Grade 2 will do a Science and Grade 3 English.
This arrangement allow the teacher to work with one grade while the other work on their
own from their worksheet.

Here an example of this type of timetable is given below.

2. Common subject approach


- the students in each grade level will study the same subject at the same time but will
work on different activities.
So, it said here that all the grade level taught by one teacher and teach by the same
subject at the same time

Example 1 in Mathematics subjects


Topic: Place Value
Grade 1: Finding the Place value of Tens.
Grade 2: Finding the Place value of Hundreds.
Grade 3: Finding the Place value of Thousands.

Example 2: The grades maybe assigned the following activities in Math


Grade 1: Fraction (Coloring half of an object)
Grade 2: Odd and even numbers (Addition of fraction with like terms)
Grade 3: Measurement (Joan made 40 cookies. If 3/8 of the cookies are burnt in the
oven, how many cookies were not burnt?

You teach the same topic in a particular subject with a different grade level at the
same time you will give them a different activity according to their grade level.

Tips for timetabling in multi-grade class


 Math and other subjects need more concentration and should be taught in the
morning.
 Consider the student's maturity and attention span. Younger students have
shorter attention span and may need to change activities more often.
 Allow adequate time to teach and supervise all the grade-level may it be in a
whole class or small group activities.
 The timetable should be posted clearly and made familiar to the student.
