⇒ √b is rational.
This contradicts the fact that √b is irrational.
The contradiction arises by assuming that a + √b is rational.
Therefore, a + √b is irrational.
2. (b) 3, -1
Explanation: x2 - 2x - 3 = x2 - 3x + x - 3
= x(x - 3) + (x - 3) = (x - 3) (x + 1)
∴ (x - 3)(x + 1) = 0 ⇒ x = 3 or x = -1
3. (a) x = 3, y = 2
Explanation: We have:
2x + 3y = 12 …(i)
3x – 2y = 5 …(ii)
Now, by multiplying (i) by 2 and (ii) by 3 and then adding them we get:
4x + 9x = 24 + 15
13x = 39
39
x= 13
=3
Now putting the value of x in (i), we get
2 × 3 + 3y = 12
12−6
∴ y= 3
=2
4. (c) Real and Equal roots
Explanation: D = b2 - 4ac
D = (-20)2 - 4 × 4 × 25
D = 400 - 400
D = 0. Hence Real and equal roots.
5. (c) Arithmetic Progression
Explanation: Progressions with an equal common difference are known as Arithmetic Progression. i.e the difference between
any two consecutive terms is constant throughout the series, this constant difference is called common difference usually
denoted by the letter d
if a is the 1st term, d is a common difference, then the AP is represented by a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d ... a + (n - 1)d
6. (d) 3, -9
Explanation: Let the ordinate of other end = y
then distance between (2, -3) and (10, y) = 10 units

⇒ √(x2 − x1 ) + (y2 − y1 ) = 10
−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− −

⇒ √(10 − 2) + (y + 3) = 10
−−− −−−−− −−−−
2 2
⇒ √(8) + (y + 3) = 10
1/2
⇒ (y + 9) (y - 3) = 0
Either y + 9 = 0, then y = -9
or y - 3 = 0, then y = 3
∴ y = 3, -9
7. (a) 9
Explanation: Given: 9 sec2A - 9 tan2A
= 9(sec2A - tan2A)
= 9 × 1 = 9 ... [∵ sec2θ - tan2θ = 1]
8. (c) 4
Explanation: Suppose AB is the ladder of length x m
∴ OA = 2m, ∠ OAB = 60o
⇒ 2= x
2
⇒ =4m
