Kitchen + Bathroom Design, we celebrate 15 years of

could last forever, Melbourne is nothing if not famous for
its turbulent weather. For those colder days, we speak with
some technology experts on page 34 in ‘Things Are Heating
Up’ about the latest underfloor heating technology and how

time.

PRESERVING NATURE’S GOLD

The Cantilever Interiors team is excited to announce its recent involvement within
a stellar community rejuvenation project in the heart of the Darebin City Council.
A locally established group within the bustling Northcote community has worked
tirelessly to develop, rejuvenate and upgrade what was once neglected, overgrown,
unusable land, and transform it into a thriving, native garden and pathway for the
entire community to enjoy. As part of this improvement – and with the aims of
improving and upgrading the bushland along the trainline in Northcote – Cantilever
Interiors has built and installed a range of nesting boxes to help attract native
wildlife to the area. For director of Cantilever Interiors, Travis Dean, the initiative
was a way for the company to use its skills and give back where it matters. “It feels
like a way we can contribute to the local community,” he explains.
With many trees being cleared to make way for urban development, nest boxes
can be an excellent alternative to help provide a safe space for native animals
to retreat to. These enclosures mimic the natural hollows of trees and provides

DISCOVER THE DUCTED DIFFERENCE
orever at the forefront of rangehood innovation, Schweigen is proud to be educating homeowners across the
F globe on the differences between rangehood varieties. Most recently, Schweigen has shared the differences
between the functions of ducted rangehoods compared with recirculating rangehoods – and how each can
complement different lifestyles and needs.
Much like the name, ducted rangehoods pass cooking exhaust through mesh filters or baffles, with the aims of
capturing airborne grease, before venting smoke and odours through ducts to the outdoors. These rangehoods
do require ducts to be factored into your kitchen design and installed through the wall, or the ceiling above your
cooktop to the outdoors.
Ducted rangehoods are known to produce a better quality of air – with humid and polluted air being completely
extracted from the kitchen, you can enjoy a higher rate of air extraction, and most impressively, ducted rangehoods
with external motors can move the noise out of the home, meaning you can enjoy peaceful silence within the kitchen.
Ducted rangehoods are however, limited to where they can be placed within the home. This is all dependent on
where exactly you can run a ducting system above your cooktop, and through to the great outdoors.
Moving on to recirculating rangehoods; these rangehoods work by extracting cooking exhaust through charcoal or
carbon filters to remove airborne contaminants and odours before recycling this same air back into the kitchen.
Recirculating rangehoods do not require a ductwork to the outdoors, meaning they are more versatile and easier
to install than a ducted rangehood, with less structural or building management constraint.
These rangehoods however, typically run louder due to the sheer fan power required to draw air through the filters.
Alongside this, moist air from the cooking steam is filtered but reintroduced back into the kitchen, meaning it can
get very warm while cooking. Plus, the charcoal or carbon filters from your recirculating rangehood often need to
be replaced once or twice a year, depending on their usage.
The rangehood you choose is up to your personal preference – and your kitchen design of course! If air quality and
noise are your top concerns, like they are for many homeowners, then ducted rangehoods with external motors

A TRUE COUNTRY HOME RESCUE

S Blaze – this time within Channel 9’s successful series, which aired in December 2022, Country Home Rescue.
Having risen into the public eye through 14 seasons of judging and sharing her expertise on Channel 9’s The Block,
Shaynna Blaze is now embarking on her next adventure – the restoration of a tired and run-down 1800s historical
home in regional Victoria’s Kyneton. Alongside her two children, Carly and Jess, Blaze will navigate the endless
problems and roadblocks that come with turning this once renovation nightmare into a warm and inviting forever
home, in an exciting room by room reveal.
Within this incredible renovation, Seaview Cabinets – under the guidance of company director Garrath Jones – has
been able to use the team’s cabinetry skills to produce exceptional end results, which are revealed week by week in
this stellar display of craftsmanship and drive. Seaview Cabinets created all of the wardrobes within the historical
homes’ main house, as well as the kitchenette and wet bar within the Carriage House.
A testament to the quality of work within the Carriage House, Seaview Cabinets has been awarded two ACFA
awards in conjunction with Blaze; Best In-Built Furniture and Best Kitchenette Under $35,000 respectively. This
longstanding relationship between Seaview Cabinets and Blaze has seen them collaborate on a number of jobs
together, including in 2018 which secured both parties a FIAA award win for Best Kitchen Over $80,000.
This is not the first time Seaview Cabinets has worked alongside such huge names either, with the company also

team at Living Space Joinery completely reimagined the building.
The brief for Lachlan Shepherd Architects called for a refined home with a highly
detailed application of material, but with a comfortable, warm aesthetic. Living Space
Joinery’s response was to utilise an earthy, textural palette to harmonize with the
surrounding environment, essentially appearing as though the reimagined building
had always been there. This was achieved through solid blackbutt kitchen joinery
with a custom Concrete Republic benchtop to retain the rustic character of the space.
The team are especially proud of the cleverly mirrored ‘invisible wardrobe’, which is
approximately 4.8m high and skillfully mitred to perfection.

The previous kitchen in this home was small with an awkward entrance into the butler’s pantry. The angle made movement
throughout the kitchen difficult and disjointed, with a lack of flow between spaces. In this new design, Smith & Smith Kitchens
has opted to demolish that angled wall, streamlining the entrance to the pantry. This creates a stunning, theatrical backdrop
to the beautiful stove and overhead cabinetry.
The new butler’s pantry is equipped with maximised storage, organised seamlessly to overcome the challenges of the space.
Inside, the fridge, dishwasher, and other appliances are kept out of view from the living area, allowing the kitchen to remain
free of clutter or mess.

As these ceilings are standard height, the company has expertly chosen tall, narrow cabinetry to surround the cooktop. This
intelligent decision creates the illusion that the ceilings are higher than they are, aided by the white of the panels seamlessly
flowing into the white of the ceiling. These clever techniques are a true demonstration of the decades of industry experience

The generous kitchen island bench centres the room with its vivid black colour and stunning Neolith benchtop. The bold and
daring design choice to install the cooktop straight into the island bench is made possible by the Neolith benchtop’s heat

The owner of this home requested the window to wall splashback, offering a breathtaking view of the garden. The light-filled
space is further brightened by the vibrant green of the shrubbery peeking in, another way that natural elements combine
with the contemporary and modern design.
Allowing for optimal functionality while maintaining the desired vision, Smith & Smith Kitchens has cleverly used bespoke
panelling to integrate the various kitchen appliances. The dishwasher is completely concealed within matte black joinery
that mimics the look of two drawers, while the ovens are on display but nicely framed within the centre of the surrounding
cabinets.
Storage was maximised similarly without compromising the modern look created by the cabinetry. Drawers within drawers
increase the available space while maintaining the clean lines on the American oak doors, accommodating generously for a
family household.

Aware that the laundry door would often be open, Smith & Smith Kitchens opted to shift the washing machine and dryer into
a corner, allowing the American oak sink cabinet to be in the eye-line. As the timber is a common component throughout the
space, this decision ties the space together wonderfully.
The bold black of the kitchen island and overhead cabinetry creates a captivating spectacle without darkening the room. A
sense of drama and intrigue is added to the space, all while leaving enough room for the American oak to add a much-needed
warmth. This is an awe-inspiring blend of modern style and nostalgic delight.

Better Bathrooms & Kitchens worked with Sam Robinson Interior Design to update elements of this traditional Californian
bungalow and modernise the space. A fresh, inviting revitalisation of the kitchen, dining room and bathroom brings this
brilliant home back to life and infuses contemporary luxury within the building’s classical charm.
Maintaining the monochrome palette, the kitchen is elegant in black and white. With high-end fittings and appliances, such
as the stunning Classic Deluxe oven from Falcon, Smeg kettle and Breville coffee machine – the kitchen exudes a classy
elegance that is both pretty and practical.
The kitchen cabinetry is in a white, shaker profile and has been designed with ample storage for maximum functionality. The
marriage between old and new can be found even in the smallest of details – from the antique-style cup pull handles to the
recessed lighting – creating a harmonious balance. Stunning subway tiles add a modern touch, while the joinery, alongside
farmhouse-style ceramic sink, maintains that traditional feel.

Instead of a splashback against one of the kitchen walls, there is a long window that invites ample natural light into the
space, giving the room an open and airy feel. The island bench, which continues the beautiful stone top throughout and
mirrors the beautiful woodwork, is functional as a servery and preparation station.
The cabinetry flows from the kitchen right through to the dining area, again providing ample storage along the wall. The
dining table is generously sized for eight, creating a seamless entertaining area. There’s also a double-sized wine cooler and
beautiful pendant lighting to complete the space.
To highlight the home’s existing statement pieces, such as the fireplace, Better Bathrooms & Kitchens created a storage unit
surrounding it. Additional wall storage continues into the living area, where a mullion frame curio cabinet showcases the
homeowner’s prised books and décor.

The bathroom, although a continuation of the monochromatic luxe feel of the kitchen and dining, is dominated by black
cabinetry rather than the white. As a result, the space takes on a moodier, hotel-like feel compared to the airy lightness of
the other spaces. The same shaker style cabinets provide optimum storage and are complemented by the custom-built vanity
with dual sinks and generous bench space for practical use.
The true stand out of this room is the black clawfoot bathtub, placed under a light-filled window. Exposed silver tapware add
a luxurious touch to brighten the space ensuring that this bathroom feels expensive, yet inviting.
Other luxuries include the ceiling-height drying rack, walk-in shower and additional storage cabinetry for linen. The space is
tied together with the bold and beautiful patterned tiles, which shine centre stage and perfectly juxtapose the minimal look

RENOVATION SENSATION
A FAMILY FITOUT
This remarkable renovation was brought to life by the team at Mint Kitchen Group. The homeowners – a family of four and
their friendly dog – needed a kitchen redesign that suited the lifestyle of hungry teens and parents who are both avid chefs.
Before the fit out, the kitchen was dark, dated and not very user-friendly, so functionality and light were priorities for this
refreshing build. To make this happen, the existing wall dividing the kitchen and meals area was removed to open up the
space, making it ideal for the regular entertaining that this family loves.
Two large skylights were incorporated into the vaulted ceiling to add a sense of height and flood the kitchen with an
abundance of natural light; this is enhanced by a new splashback window above the sink and cooktop area that looks out
onto the deck. A double-sided island bench with allowance for seating at the rear created a place for casual dining for the
family, as well as adding extra kitchen storage below.

DREAMY WOODEN KITCHEN
Built into the existing framework of the home, the kitchen was the centrepiece to the newly built extension, made to be open
and welcoming as well as functional. A marriage of solid timber, modern white and natural tones, this kitchen is light-filled
and beautiful.
These existing tall ceilings, high windows and skylights are a stunning feature of the kitchen space. Inline Cabinetry ensured
that the cabinetry was subtle and didn’t detract from these established features. By creating floating shelves instead of
upper cabinetry in the majority of the main kitchen and the butler’s pantry nook, the space feels airy, simple, and open.
The bench legs are made from solid American oak, while the upper cabinetry and floating shelves are made of polytec
‘Natural Oak Ravine’, giving a grounded warmth to the room. The brass handles also bring in the earthy tones against the
white matte cabinetry, which is a polytec ‘Sussex’ vinyl wrap.

Utilising stunning textural and linear elements, the island bench serves as a central hub that ties the kitchen together and
makes it a prime area for entertaining. The use of Steccawood’s ‘Natural Oak Ravine’ panelling in a half round profile offers
a natural warmth to the sleek lines of the kitchen and is paired perfectly with the Fibonacci Terrazzo benchtops in ‘Pavlova’.
The curving edge of the bench brings a natural flow to the room and functions in beautiful accordance with the multiple-entry
design of the kitchen.

delightful early 2000’s home in Wantirna South. Each of these spaces were in need of an update to meet today’s standards
of luxury and style, a renovation that the experts at SCO Design handled with ease.
The downstairs powder room is the embodiment of sophistication; with a contemporary cove-profile vanity topped with a
bright Calcutta stone benchtop and splashback, this space has been truly rejuvenated into a modern oasis. Cool stone-look
tiles add dimension without darkening this bright and inviting space, while matte black tapware and mirror frames tie in with
the vanity’s dark colour palette to create a stylish definition.

open-plan design. The team moved the toilet, shower and vanity from its original house layout of separate water closet and
shower room, into the same room. This change creates an ease of movement and practicality, with the look of an expensive,
spa-like retreat.
The organic, clay-like look of the bathroom colour palette was achieved with the use of volcanic-coloured ‘Spicy Matt’ floor
tiles that wrap up the wall behind the bath. Paired with the matte white wall tiles, the custom wall-hung vanity in spotted
gum and the hand-made concrete basin ensure that this bathroom is warm and inviting.
Absolutely bespoke to the homeowners, this retreat pays homage to its origins with recycled and reused materials. The
stand-out features are the vintage elements – the stained-glass window above the bath and the art deco wall sconce fit

Häcker Australia’s latest project shines a spotlight on its walnut kitchen – a space that proves kitchens don’t have to be
large to pack a punch. Presented with a brief to utilise the space as both a functional kitchen and office space without
compromising on aesthetic, Häcker Australia crafted a warm kitchen that evoked a sense of calm.
The use of the ‘Walnut Bali’ coupled with soft touches of the ‘Laser Soft’ black provide the warm tonal feel that provides the
perfect segue from kitchen to work. To maintain a minimalist aesthetic, both the fridge and dishwasher are integrated into
the seamless walnut profile across the kitchen. This is then contrasted with the linear black matte handles.
The stepped island to kitchen table provides both form and function. In the small format kitchen, the ability to provide a
designated dining space that does not to double as a workspace is unique. The office space was thoughtfully designed to
incorporate a desk, as well as open shelving in the walnut and concealed storage for office supplies and appliances.

Lapege is proud to stock Imola’s distinguished new collection ‘The Room’, which features stunning, quality ceramic marble
tiles that are sure to impress. The ‘Grey Roots’ tile (left) is one of these eye-catching options – an appealing marble
characterised by its gorgeous gold and cream ripples. A sense of depth is created as these patterns contrast the white to
grey shades of the tile. This unique and tantalising design captivates the eye and has a sense of intrigue and class.
Rare and remarkable, the ‘Gris Breche Dumas’ tile (centre) is one for the ages. Modelled off the pebble of the same name,
this tile is cleverly designed with levels of contrast between the varying shades of white and grey. This pebble is scarce and
rarely found, as quarries of it are nearly empty and ‘Gris Breche Dumas’ celebrates this wonderous stone by recreating its
unique patterns on ceramic tile.
‘Onyx Aqua Blue Gold’ (top right) is a sight to behold, a tile with gorgeous gold detailing that swims in a sea of breathtaking
blue. The base of this tile is sedimentary limestone, which gets this stunning colour from spring water and infiltration. The
standout feature of this tile is the shiny, transparent effect that it gets on the surface. This is an extremely rare feature that
adds a level of exclusivity to this breathtaking tile.

In a medium saucepan bring the milk and stock to boil.
Turn down to simmer and slowly pour in the polenta stirring constantly.

Continue stirring until the polenta is cooked and season with salt, pepper and

3 whole oranges Boil the oranges for 2 hours, changing the water three times during this process –
this removes the bitterness from the oranges.

Strain oranges and discard the water. Once cool cut oranges in half and remove

Puree the whole oranges in blender add eggs, sugar and baking powder, ensure
250g caster sugar that the mixture is smooth and aerated.

Bake in a preheated oven 160°C for approximately 1 hour or until cooked through.
