Hebrews 4:14-16: Mercy and Grace in the Nick of Time (The previous note can be found at http://www.facebook.com/note.php?

note_id=10150119528948554) In the previous note we looked at the written Word which cuts deep like a two-edged sword, and the Living Word who sees our deepest, most hidden thoughts and feelings. All this was to tell us that any unbelief, no matter how hidden, is unacceptable to God. Today we will see why we have no reason to doubt; because we have a great High Priest in Christ Jesus. 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we areyet he did not sin. (Hebrews 4:14-15) Jesus Christ is our great High Priest. At this point in the letter, Paul has proven Christs superiority to the prophets, the angels, and Moses, and now he is moving to explain how and why Christ is superior to Aaron and the Levitical priesthood in the Old Testament. The transition moves from the written word as scrutinizer to the Living Word as Sympathizer. (MacDonald) The written word exposes our imperfection and ugliness for the sole purpose of referring us to the Living Word, the only One capable of transforming us into a righteous, Godly character. According to MacDonald, Christs greatness is praised in four ways in these verses: 1. Christ is a great High Priest. No other human priest has ever been worthy of the title great. 2. He has gone into heaven (In some versions the third heaven, meaning above the atmospheric heaven/sky and stellar heaven/space). This is the home of God. This refers to His ascension and glorification at the Fathers right hand also mentioned in Hebrews 1:3

3. He used the name Jesus. Remember that the name Jesus was given to the Christ, the Son of God once He was born on earth. This is His human name. This is the name that specifically links Him to humanity. 4. He is the Son of God. Remember Hebrews 1:2 names Him the Heir of all things, making Him equal with His Father. Christ is divine. He is God! His humanity qualified Him from our viewpoint, and His deity qualifies Him from His Fathers viewpoint! He is sufficient both on earth and in heaven, and thus it is safe to say He is a great High Priest! Therefore, since we have this perfectly sufficient High Priest in Jesus Christ, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. You can hold on tight because your Strength, your Priest, is capable! We can hold on because Jesus fully understands our trials and persecutions. He can sympathize with our weaknesses because He was tempted in every way as we are -- yet without sin. He fought the same fight we are fighting today, and won! Christ was tempted and successfully resisted the whole time He was on earth. He was perfectly obedient to His father (John 5:19), who by His nature led Jesus through the paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3). Let us then approach Gods throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16) This text gets me excited, and verse 16 is the kicker. Because we have an awesome and perfect High priest who understands us based on personal experience, let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. We come with confidence because He has finished providing purification for sins (1:2) and He has invited us to abide in Him in John 15 and many other places, so we have no rejection to be afraid of! In the past, people could not come to Gods throne. Only the high priest could, and he could only do it once a year. But Christs sacrifice sets us free to come to Gods throne. So lets take advantage and run to it like children who were just set free for recess, or like a shopping mob waiting for a big sale to open. Lets run to God and get mercy and grace to help us in our time of need! According to G. Campbell Morgan, the Greek phrase in time of need is a colloquialism that is an exact equivalent to the English phrase in the nick of time. This communicates that God grants this grace and mercy exactly where and when we need it! Therefore, let us come boldly before the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and grace in the nick of time. How wonderful is this invitation!

I know this note was long and it covered a lot, and as I result I didnt fully go deep into everything. So tell me, how does it matter to your life and affect you that Jesus sympathizes with us from personal experience? Or any of the other points? What is the relevance of all this? I pray you were super blessed by this! :) (<a href=http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150118926683554>Hebrews 4:111</a>) (<a href=http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150117060528554 >Hebrews 3:12-19</a>) (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/note.php? note_id=10150116513903554&id=1233120181">Hebrews 3:1-11</a>) (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/notes/estepha-francisque/hebrews-2-jesusangels-part-2/10150115902298554">Hebrews 2</a>) (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/notes/estepha-francisque/hebrews-14-14jesus-angels/10150115366843554">Hebrews 1:4-14</a>) (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/note.php? note_id=10150114353813554&id=1233120181">Hebrews 1:1-3</a>) (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/note.php? note_id=10150113831453554&id=1233120181">Introduction to Hebrews</a>) Sources: MacDonald, William.
