EXPLORING THE GENDER FACTOR IN CAREER DECISION MAKING:

AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

A Qualitative Research Presented to

Lanao National High School

In Partial Fulfillment
of the Requirements for
Investigation, Immersion, and Inquiry

LOVELY JOY C. RINSULAT

MARCH 2023
CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the intricate ways in

which gender shapes various aspects of our lives, including career choices. Gender

has been a significant factor in shaping the career choices and job opportunities

available to individuals. Although significant progress has been made towards

gender equality, gender stereotypes and discrimination still exist in many aspects of

society, including the workplace. (Valls et al., 2018).

In Thailand, a developing country in Southeast Asia, women still have fewer

career opportunities and they are economically, socially, and politically

disadvantaged compared with men. For managerial positions, men are thought to be

more suitable than women. The perceived gender bias in employment opportunities

can block individuals from choosing their preferable choice. The previous research

found work-related differences between males and females. This means gender gap

in career choice still exists. Both males and females may perceive that they are

expected to do particular types of work in which they do not really need to do. Their

career chances are possibly blocked by the perceived gender bias (Wesarat et al,

2016).

In the Philippines, career perception is of utmost significance in an individual's

life, especially for college students aspiring to enter an industry-aligned to their

programs. Ambiguous career paths may cause dissatisfaction and loss of

individual resources. Choosing a career is often complicated, and their long-term

results are not immediately apparent to individuals (Nyamwange&Masai Mara

University, 2016). Good career planning leads to life fulfillment; however, different

factors can affect these perceptions. One's career is a significant concern in youth

developmental life. It is associated with either negative or positive psychological,

physical and socio-economic variations which exist beyond a young age in the

adult stage (Twumasi et al., 2018)

The researchers have not come across of the study that dealt on the gender

factor in career choice in local setting. This analytical study seeks to unravel the

multifaceted relationship between gender and career decision-making, exploring

the societal, familial, and workplace factors that influence individuals based on

their gender. By delving into this complex interplay, we aim to contribute to a

deeper understanding of how gender norms and expectations impact the paths

individuals choose to tread in their professional lives. Furthermore, through this

study we wanted to give the people a better idea in choosing their career.
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this analytical qualitative study is to unravel the multifaceted

relationship between gender and career decision-making, exploring the societal,

familial, and workplace factors that influence individuals based on their gender.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the factors that influences the Senior High School students in choosing

their career?

2. What insights and suggestions they can share to other upcoming Senior High

School students in choosing their career?

Scope and Delimitations

This study was limited only to randomly selected Grade 10 students of Lanao

National High School. This study targeted JuniorHighSchool students at Lanao

National High School who are actively considering their careers. Nevertheless,

they do not include pupils from other schools in Kidapawan or neighboring

provinces. The researchers will give as much consideration as they can to any

nuances that may emerge during the course of this investigation.

Theoretical Lens

This study is anchored on John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice. The

Theory of Career Choice postulated that careers are determined by an

interaction between our personality and the environment with people; thus, it

maintains that in choosing a career, people prefer jobs where they can be

around with the people they share interest with. They search for environments

that will let them use their skills and abilities, and express their attitudes and

values, while taking on enjoyable problems and roles. Behavior is determined

by an interaction between personality and environment. Holland’s theory is

centered on the notion that most people fit into one of six personality types

such as realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional

(Leung, 2008)

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will give valuable benefit to the following:

To the Administrators/Managers - This study can be a basis for

possible curricular redirection and program development of the school.

To the Guidance Personnel - The findings of the study may bear

implications on the career choice of the students; thus, providing the counselors

with insights and perceptions helpful in providing guidance to the students.

To the Parents - The study can assist and guide their children to choose
the right course taking into considerations the different factors affecting career

choice decisions.

To the Students - This study will assist the students in keeping an open

mind regarding the significance of selecting their strand properly, as well as in

sharing this information with their other students and the Senior High School

Department.

To the Future Researcher- The purpose of this research study is to

provide researchers with additional information and help students fully

comprehend the significance of the factors that can influence your choice.

Definition of Terms

For better clarification and understanding of the terms related to this study,

the following are defined operationally:

Career Choice. As used in this study, refers to the process through which

students come to make career –related decisions.

Students. As used in this study, refers to people who have been formally

admitted to and registered in the as full-time candidates, secondary and non-

secondary educational systems.

Factors. As used in this study, that affect student’s career choice.

Influence. As used in this study, refers to the impact of an individualthat

people need to take into consideration when choosing a career.

Phenomenological Inquiry. As used in this study, refers to obtain

knowledge about how we think and feel in the most direct ways.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Review of the literature will be explored within this chapter that evaluate

and contrast research in factors that influence career choice decisions and the

extrinsic and intrinsic factors will be discussed in detail with the help of current

research studies. Specifically, the literature will reveal what factors are important

in making career choices by the Senior High School students and which factors

are impactful in different contexts and cultures in the world. These factors

eventually all guide to the awareness that career choice is not a lineal process

but that it has factors that are influential in terms of making future plans and

those factors themselves are influenced by the surroundings, external

environment, country situation, family orientation and personal interests.

A student's life is vital staged by early career selection. It affects a variety of

choices that they make regarding their careers. The career one choose to pursue

influences the subjects, universities, institutions, businesses, and job profiles one

picks. After graduating from college, one of the most crucial decisions you will

make is the occupation you want to pursue in order to advance in your life. You

should start thinking about this important decision while you are a high school or

grade 12 student. It can be challenging to decide which course is best for your
needs at this level, but whichever course a student chooses at this time will have

a significant impact on their career choice. At this level, students get to prepare

their minds toward the course they will study in a higher institution

According to School Drillers (2022), students' profession choices in their first

years of high school are influenced by a variety of circumstances. When it comes

time to pick the ideal career to aid them in the future, these elements are a few of

the biggest issues that many students may have to deal with. Even after

receiving their diploma, it is highly likely that students will still be lost or unsure

about their chosen choice. They don't seem to have a clear idea of what they

want to do and appear unsure of the degrees they want to pursue or those they

already hold.

The most essential thing is to make a decent and clear job choice early on so

that one can thrive and achieve more in the profession of choice, but the

elements affecting this desire are the main challenges to finding the ideal career

for yourself.

Factors Affecting the Career Choice Decisions

According toGacohi et al., (2017), choosing a degree programed to study

in the university is a critical career task that is a major turning point in a student's

life which not only is a start to workplace readiness, but also establishes the

student in a career path that opens as well as closes life opportunities. Failure to

achieve this task may cause dissatisfaction within the individual and difficulty in

handling later career tasks. Career information had a high influence on the

choice of degree programmed of students in public universities. Furthermore,

provision of career information was a significant factor in influencing the choice of

degree programed of all the students in public universities. Therefore, the training

and equipping of career guidance counsellors in schools to enhance their

competence in assisting the students in making career decisions is highly

recommended.

Emulation Of Friends.Emulating friends is a common habit of many

students, and as a result, students often choose a career goal just because they

know someone or one of their friends has chosen it. This is just one of the many

factors influencing students' career choice in their early years

Often times the student did not realize that the degree they choose to pursue

is very important and that it is meant to relate to what kind of work they want to

do in the future. They find themselves really lost in the crowd and will just choose

to do what others are going to do, not thinking about how that will affect them

until it is too late(School Drillers, 2022).

Skills, Abilities and Talents. This is a significant influencer when it comes

to career/ major choice. Since the goal is always to graduate with top honors to

land a good job, it is crucial to pick something that you can tackle adequately.

Keep in mind that different courses require different work ethic.

Trait-factor theories, one of the oldest career development topics, gave rise

to the concept of thinking about your skills, abilities, and talents and how they

can match a given vocation. According to these beliefs, occupational profiles

should be developed for certain tasks and individual distinctions should be

identified in order to match people to occupations. During a formal examination,

you may determine which things you find enjoyable and which you are competent

in. Many resources, like the Career One Stop Skills Provider, are accessible

online (EduBerdie, 2022).

Advice from influential people in a student's life. Advice from influential

persons in a student's life can have a big impact on their decision when it comes

to what major to pursue in college. Friends and relatives are frequently among

these powerful individuals. For instance, there is a very high likelihood that a

child would select a course that leads to the same occupation if their parents are

both extremely successful.

Recognize that students consider their decision to choose a major in college,

and subsequently a certain career path, to be a highly significant one. This

implies that students frequently ask some of the powerful individuals they know

for help. The counsel individuals receive from these people has a major impact

on the choice they make (Khylstov, 2020).

Lack of Counseling. One of the key elements influencing students'

profession choice in their formative years is a lack of counseling since it exposes

them to a broader social and cultural context, including socioeconomic

conditions, cultural and social norms, gender roles, and a lack of decision-making

procedures. If students cannot obtain the appropriate counseling and career help

they require. Because of this, it may be challenging for individuals to select an

early career that will advance their lives.

A student will not have the valuable opportunity to learn about all the options

that are accessible depending on their preferences without the correct career

counseling while they are in school (School Drillers, 2022).

Peer Pressure. This aspect is the simplest approach to avoid making

independent decisions. The majority of students like to travel by following the

throng. The practice that is most in vogue when choosing a university or college

is "Follow your friends." The majority decision is regarded as the best decision.

The number of students who fail to excel in their careers and simply continue on

with an average performance has increased due to this thinking (Ogunleye,

2018).

Limited Financial Resources. Most students that have parent with limited

financial resources worry that if they end up choosing a career that is based only

on their interests, or they fail to secure a good job soon after their studies, then

they are going to miss out on having any chance in the future

This is very common in areas where most parents are not gainfully

employed or where income of most parents are so low that they cannot provide

money for the training or continuous education of their children (Ampofo, 2020)

Social and Economic Conditions. Our decision-making regarding our

careers is always influenced by the social and economic environment. This

setting is addressed in addition to other aspects by a number of career theories,

including Social Cognitive Career Theory and Social Learning. Our decisions can

be influenced by events that occur in our life, and in some cases, these events
may even dictate what we should do. How our careers progress might also be

impacted by changes in the employment market and economy (EduBerdie,

2022).

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

The methods for doing research using researchers are discussed in this

chapter. Also, the approach for gathering data is provided in this chapter. As

phenomenological study, this one aims to collect a variety of respondents’

experiences.

Research Design

The major methodological framework that was utilized in this research

wasqualitative-phenomenological study. Phenomenological study is to explicate

the meaning, structure, and essence of the lived experiences of a person, or a

group of people, around a specific phenomenon (Christensen et al., 2010)

In particular, it aimed to examine what factors influences the student’s career

choice and how a student’s chosen career affect their future.

Thus, this utilized qualitative tool in gathering data particularly the in-depth

interview and focus group discussion.

Research Participants

This study involved the ten randomly selected Senior High School

students of Lanao National High School. During the in-depth interview who were

determined using random sampling technique. The criteria for the identification of

the participants were the following: (1)bonafide Senior High School students

Lanao National High School, (2) able to know the chosen career of student, (3)

able to know the factors influencing them. Upon identification of the research

participants for IDI, an informed Consent was secured for them.

Research Instrument

This study made use of only one type of research instrument, namely, In-

depth interview (IDI) Questionnaire. The researcher prepared a semi- structured

interview questions as a tool to determine the factors influencing the chosen

career of a students.

Moreover, all researcher instrument will be subjected to the validation of

experts. The first draft of the researcher instrument will be submitted to the

researcher adviser for comments, suggestions and recommendations to improve

its presentation with the corrections to be included and integrated. The final

revision will be made by incorporating the connections, comment is and

suggestions given by the expert validators before the gathering of data.

Data Collection

Before gathering the data, a letter of approval to conduct the study will be

sent to the School Head of Lanao National High School Sir Eric D. Pasana, to

seek permission to conduct the study.

Upon approval, the researchers will secure an informed Consent from the

identified research participants. After the consent, the researcher would start to

gather the data from the participants.

To provide a rich source of data, the researchers will undergo phases of

gathering data.An In- depth Interview (IDI) using a semi- structural interview

questionnaire was conducted by the researchers in order to determine the factors

influencing the chosen career of the students. There were possible questions had

undergone the process

Also, before the conduct of In- depth Interview(IDI) the researchers will

conduct a brief orientation to the participants as to with the purpose of the data

collection, and that, each one of them shall undergo this process because, the

nature of the study was potentially and highly confidential for the participants

involved, their names were hidden, instead pseudonyms with their participant ID

were used to conceal their true identity.

Furthermore, during the data collection, the researchers will use a

smartphone for voice and recording. This was to make certain that everything

which was transpired during the data collection was obtained. The voice or video

recording of the IDI will be done after the consent and cooperation was sought
from the participants. Right after the IDI and the researchers will immediately

transcribe and analyzed data.

Data Analysis

In analyzing data of the study, the researchers made use of thematic

analysis utilizing Miles and Huberman Framework. This type of data analysis was

considered appropriate for the present study. There are three main components

of the said framework: data reduction, data display, and drawing and verifying

conclusions (Punch, 2005). These components involved coding (or categorizing

data, and describing details and implications leading to themes), memoing

(or writing and gathering written notes of thoughts and ideas and links about

concepts and drawing a sketch of graphs), and developing propositions.

Before qualitative data analysis took place, the researcher transferred first

all of the record data to the computer. After the transfer, the researchers made

the transcripts. The researchers ensured that all transcribed data from the IDI

were recorded in its original form. All Bisayan, Tagalog, and English statements,

words and utterances were recorded verbatim. This was to ensure that all

recoded data for analysis were kept original and authentic.

First, in the data reduction, the mass of qualitative data that the

researchers obtained from the IDI and were reduced and organized, for example

coding and discarding irrelevant data. At this stage, the researchers tried and

discarded all irrelevant information, but did ensure that they have access to it

later if required, as unexpected findings may need them to re-examine some data

previously considered unnecessary.

Second, in the data display, in order for the researchers to draw

conclusions from the mass of data, it was displayed in the form of graphical

formats. This comes in the process of memoing.

Lastly, in the conclusion drawing/verification, the analysis will be done by

the researchers to begin to developed conclusions regarding the study. These

initial conclusions were then verified, that is their validity was examined through

reference to the existing transcripts/records.

Moreover, all though the analysis, the researchers went back to the

research questions of the study as a guide. The researchers’ assigned first

descriptive codes to all participants with corresponding participant ID. IDI-KI

stand for In- depth interview- Key Informant. Each participant was assigned to

the type number of organization and coding purposes.

Furthermore, particularly in the coding process, identification of root code

or major theme and branch code or sub-theme were done by the researcher.

Coding were done while doing the memoing, drawing and verifying conclusions

all the same time.

As being stipulated by Punch (2005), memoing begins at the start of the

analysis along with coding and drawing and verifying conclusions is likely to

happen concurrently with them. During the duration of the analysis of information,
the researcher made us of multi-colored sticky notes for easy identification of

codes.

Trustworthiness and Authenticity

In order to achieve validityand reliability, the researchers will use

credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability, techniques of Lincoln

and Guba(1985) in conducting this qualitative-phenomenological study. The

following paragraphs explain the process of achieving each technique.

With the intention of making the research more credible, the researchers

will use this method in gathering the data: In-depth Interview (IDI). The

researchers will employ investigator triangulation since the analysis of data will

be conducted by all the researchers together with their adviser/data analysis.

Hence, through those methods, triangulation was attained.

Triangulation technique is the combination of two or more data sources,

investigators, methodological approaches, theoretical perspectives within the

same study. This method ensured the validity of the results of the study

particularly the major and sub- themes that will be extracted from the conducted

in-depth interview. Hence, making this research employing qualitative form of

data analysis more credible. Moreover, the researcher will make sure that the

whole duration of the discussion will be recorded and all important responses of

the participants will be taken into account using recording gadgets and notes.
Moreover, in achieving transferability the researchers will ensure that

sufficient contextual information will be provided the language data as well as

describing each of the participants. Detailed account of each will be evident in

the entire study. With these reasons, future researchers could use the research

to unravel new discoveries related to this study.

Furthermore, to address the issue of dependability, all participants will

receive a complete copy of the transcripts of the IDI to be conducted. The

participants will be assured by the researchers that they would review the three

core principles accepted in research ethics was attained, namely the respect for

persons, beneficence and justice (Mack, Woodsong, Macqueen, Guest &Namey,

2005). It will be assumed that the participants will not misgivings with regard to

the data that will be gathered and transcribed, given that there will be no

transcription that will be returned back to the researcher. Nonetheless, each

participant will be assured that confidentiality was established all throughout the

analysis and presentation of the findings of the data; hence pseudonyms with

their participant IDs were employed prior to the study.

Lastly, auditing of the obtained data will be established through the use of

audit trail to attain conformability. Each of the transcriptions of the participants

will be coded in order to be easily accessed for reviewing purposes. These codes

will be indicated in every word-for-word response of each of the participant. In the

Results and Discussion Chapter, the researcher will be kept as part of the

researchers’ personal files which could be easily accessed in case of audit.

In summary, in gathering the data for this research, the researchers will

make use of the IDI. The researchers will attain triangulation. Comprehensive

description of the data gathering, data analysis and data presentation and
discussion will be presented. Moreover, the transcriptions will be presented back

to the participants for review and comments. Lastly, an adult trail will be

established. All of these will be done in order to achieve the validity and reliability

of the study.

Role of the Researchers

Background qualifications and experiences of the investigator are especially

important in qualitative research as it is the person who is the major instrument of

data collection and analysis (Lincoln and Guba, 1998).

The influence of career choice has a lasting impact on an individual. It serves

tobe a predictor and determinant of their prospective level of income, nature of

work and consequently leaves a mark on the personality, demeanor and outlook

of an individual. Thus one wrong decision can change the fate of an individual. It

is difficult for everyone to make a decision regarding their career. This individual

action is manifested on a larger scale in the economic prosperity of a nation.

Individuals who are misfits in their workplace tend to be less productive and

efficient, and therefore are unable to achieve their goals.

Further, in the conduct of this research, the researchers will serve as the

interviewers during the in-depth interview. Lastly, in the analysis of data, the

researchers will act as the transcriber, encoder, coder and interpreter. All those
roles will hopefully be performed by the researchers all throughout the conduct of

the research.

Ethical Considerations

Before conducting this study especially before the data will be gathered,

ethical issues and considerations will be dealt. The researchers will ensure the

appropriateness of identified recruiting parties and will conduct a review of level

of risks and measures to mitigate these risks (including physical, psychological

and social economic.

In terms of the avoidance of plagiarism, the researchers will undergo the

turn-it-in software to ensure that no trace/evidence of misrepresentation of

someone else’s work as her own. In the same manner, fabrication will also be

considered by the researchers wherein no trace/evidence of intentional

misrepresentation of what has been done. No making up of data and/or results,

or purposefully putting forward conclusions that were not accurate to the School

Head Sir Eric D.Pasana to give them permission to be sought and that the

activities were organized well in advance.

Also, to address ethical issues, the researchers will assign pseudonyms

with a participant ID to each participant of the study in order to ensure anonymity

of confidentiality. This was following the most significant standard in conducting

researches as posited by Berg (2009) who stated that researchers must do no

harm to their respondents.

CHAPTER IV
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter discusses about the results attained from our interview.

These were clustered into two namely; Factors that Influence the Grade 10

learners in choosing their Career Path, Insights and suggestions you can share

with other learners in choosing a career path. The following are the themes that

emerged from our in-depth interview (IDI) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD)

obtaining a deeper understanding about the Factors Influencing Students Career

Path. Moreover, what forms of intervention to be done to address this problem.

Factors that Influence the Grade 10 Students in Choosing their Career Path

Having been able to listen to the participants, we found out the factors that

influence the students in choosing their career path. Using the in-depth interview,

these are the following major theme emerged; Influence by family, Self-choice,

Financial factor, and Skills, Ability and Aspirations.

Influence by family. Some students chose their career because of their

families and also they believe that listening to their families will lead them in the

right path.

According to KI003, KI005, and KI007 most of students are influenced by

their family.
"Oo, Ingon sa akong family, nindotdawakong future
kung engineering akongkwaonperodiliniakong gusto
either mag architect or nursing.” (KI003)
(Yes, my family said that I will have a bright future if I
choose engineering but I don't like it, I rather choose
to be an architect or nursing.)

"Yes, my parents influenced me in choosing my

career because they are my parents, they only want
what is best for me and I also respect their decision
because it's the least I can do for them after all of
their sacrifices they have done just to make me finish
my studies".(KI005)

"Oo,naimpluwensyahanko sa
akoangmgaginikanannaakongkwaon kay
education, the way nilaiingon sa akoa kay mas
makaayoni sa imoha kay ako gustopudnakonina
strand".(KI007)
(Yes, my familyinfluenced me that I should choose
education, the way they tell me that this will be good
for me because I want this strand too.)

Recognize that students consider their decision to choose a major in

college, and subsequently a certain career path, to be a highly significant one.

This implies that students frequently ask to their family and some of the powerful

individuals they know for help. The counsel individuals receive from these

people has a major impact on the choice they make (Khylstov, 2020).
Self-choice. Some students make their own decisions in choosing their

career because they are capable, responsible and happy about the career that

they choose.

According to KI001, KI002, and KI0010 they stated that they choose their

career willingly and this career makes them happy.

“My parents did not influence me in choosing my

career because this is the career that I want’’. (KI001)

“Ako lang nagbuot sa akong desisyon nga kani nga

career akong kwaon”. (KI002)
(I’m the one who decide to choose my own career.)

“I choose my career willingly”. (KI0010)

The majority of people base their interest choice on their personality and

character. When a career is chosen for a person based on their personality, it

can also work the other way around. Here, a student's personality encompasses

not only how they appear on the outside but also how they see the world.

Personality traits are usually helpful in choosing a good career because they

make it simple to develop the skills we currently possess (School Drillers, 2022).

Financial Factor. Poverty can certainly affect a person’s decision

especially students in choosing a career. When facing financial hardships,

individuals often prioritize finding a job or career that can provide a stable

income and help them overcome poverty.

According to KI002, KI003, KI009, and KI0010 poverty or financial factor

are the reason why students are still undecided about the career path that

they’re going to take.

“Yes, poverty really does affect my decision since the

career that I will be choosing needs a lot of money.”
(KI0010)

“Oo, kay kulang among kwartangaibayad sa tuition”.

(KI002)
(Yes, because our money is not enough to pay the
tuition.)

“Yes, samot na ang architect, kabalo man jud ta na

expensive kayo nana course so nagalisod pud mi kay
walay trabaho akong papa unya akong mama
housewife langpud. Akong ate dili financially stable
kay ang iyang trabaho gamay lang ug sweldo so
naga lisod gyud mi”. (KI003)
(Yes, especially architecture, we all know that taking
this course is very expensive and we can’t afford it
since my father doesn’t have a job and my mother is a
plain housewife. My sister is not financially stable
because her job has a small salary so it is really
difficult for us.)

“Yes, nakaapekto ang kapobrehon namo sa pagpili

sa akong career”. (KI008)
(Yes, poverty affects my decision in choosing a
career.)

However, according to KI007 that poverty does not affect her decision in
choosing her career.
“Wala nakaapekto ang poverty sa akoa kay may
kaya man mi”. (KI007)
(Poverty does not affect my decision in choosing my
career since my family can provide my needs.)

This is very common in areas where most parents are not gainfully

employed or where income of most parents are so low that they cannot provide

money for the training or continuous education of their children (Ampofo, 2020)

Peer Pressure.
Skills, Abilities and Aspirations. Students consider their existing skills

and abilities when choosing a career. This will help the students in choosing their

career path where they can leverage their strengths and natural talents, as it can

provide a sense of fulfillment and success.

According to KI003, KI005, and KI008 considering your skills, abilities, and

aspiration allows you to make a right decision that gives you experiences and

develop your skills to succeed in your chosen field.

“Yes, many people reflect on their interest and skills

in order to choose the right career path. Deciding on
a career path allows you to attain the right education
and experiences and develop necessary skills to
succeed in your chosen field.” (KI008)

“Yes, I consider my skills and abilities in choosing my

career path because in doing so, I know that I’m
going to take is something that I’m good at and
passionate in doing. In addition to that, I’ll enjoy the
career that I would choose in the future.” (KI005)

“Yes, because if I don’t I will be the one who will

suffer if there is something will go beyond my skills.”
(KI0010)
Trait-factor theories, one of the oldest career development topics, gave

rise to the concept of thinking about your skills, abilities, and talents and how

they can match a given vocation. According to these beliefs, occupational

profiles should be developed for certain tasks and individual distinctions should

be identified in order to match people to occupations (EduBerdie, 2022).

Insights and Suggestionsof the Participants in Choosing the Career Path

After analyzing the data or information gathered from our participants, we

found out the insights and suggestions they can share to other students who are

having hard time or still undecided about choosing a career path, these are the

following major theme emerged; focus on your goals, encouragement, and

family as source of inspiration.

Focus on your goals. Most of the students advice other students to

focus on the career that they wanted to choose, study hard and keep fighting to

achieve their dreams and their goals in life.

According to KI005, KI009, and KI008 their advice is to focus on your

desired goals, study hard and keep fighting to achieve their dreams and goals in

life.

“Nothing is easy nowadays so you have to work hard

for you to be able get what you what you want in the
future.” (KI005)
“I realize that, if you choose your career path you
have to be persistent in it. You have to fight for it
because that is your own choice. It’s not easy but if
you have passion then go because choosing your
dream is you happiness.” (KI008)

“Kanang dapat pili-on jud nimo unsa ang mas suitable

sa imoha.” (KI009)
(You should choose a career that is suitable for you.)

When you set career goals, you have to be clear about the profession

that you are willing to pursue and focus on it. Career goals are also about the

steps that you need to take to become successful in your profession

(Kashyap, 2023).

Encouragement.Encouragingand supporting students to work/study hard

may help them finish their studies and fulfill their goals.

According to KI001, KI003, and KI005 encouraging students may help

them finish their studies and it may has a big impact for them to continue

achieving their goals to have a better future.

“Ang kinahanglan nako kay ang suporta sa akong

pamilya og amigo sa pagpili sa akong kurso.” (KI001)
(What I need is the support of my family and friends in
choosing my course.)

“The support that I need is the support from my family

and from my friends because after all the difficulties
and obstacles I go through, I need someone who is
willing to listen on my rants and problems.” (KI005)

“The support that I need to face the challenges that is

brought by the poverty are the love and support of my
family, and my family encouraging me to pursue my
goals.” (KI008)

The connections you make with others are critical to maintaining your

motivation throughout your career. Healthy, supportive relationships can help you

maintain productivity and motivate you to strive toward your goals. Surrounding

yourself with people who are supportive of your life and career can also help you

stay motivated by celebrating your successes and reminding you how much you

have accomplished if you begin to feel like you're losing motivation (Herrity,

2023).

Family as source of motivation. Most of the students, their motivation in

choosing a career and to fulfill their dreams are their families, friends and

relatives.

According to KI001, KI002 and KI005 their inspiration in choosing a career

is their family and friends.

“Ang akong motibasyon sa pagpili sa akong career

kay ang akong mga ginikanan.” (KI001)
(My motivation in choosing my career is my parents.)

“Ang gahatag ug motibasyon sa akoa kay ang akong

mga friends ug family nga naga support sa akoa.”
(KI002)
(My motivation is my friends and family who are
supporting me.)

“My motivation is my family, I am going to do my best

for them because they are the only one who are there
for me even on my hardest time. So I will dedicate my
success to them in the near future because they
deserve it more than I do after all their sacrifices.”
(KI005)

When students feel supported and loved by their parents, they have more

confident in their own ability to research careers and to choose a career that

would be interesting and exciting. This is important because studies show that

adolescents who feel competent regarding career decision-making, tend to

make more satisfying career choices later in life (Keller, 2023).

having a hard time choosing a career that suits them since there are a lot of
factors that are influencing them to choose a career, including skills, values, and

long-term goals. These are the things that you need to consider when choosing

a career in order to have better success in the chosen career in the long run.

Based on the findings of the study, the factors that influence the Grade

self-choice, financial factor, and skills, ability and aspirations.

Furthermore, we found out the insights of the participants that they can

share to others about choosing a career path. These are, focus on your goals,

encouragement, and family as source of inspiration.Choosing a career is a

personal decision, and it is important to follow your passions and interests. Take

time to explore different options, seek guidance from mentors or career

counselor and trust yourself.

CONCLUSION

Career planning is important for a number of reasons - having a career

development plan in place reduces the risk of you making impulsive decisions,

and it helps you to recognize when you're ready to look for new career

opportunities and develop new skills.

Selecting a career is a significant choice and one of the major steps in

achieving your life goals. Some students find it challenging to choose a career

that suits them since there are so many variables that influence them to choose

what is best for them; and that is why having an action plan to know what to do,

and having someone who is willing to give you support and guidance in

choosing is important.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY

In the light of the findings and conclusion of the study, the following

implications were formulated:

School Administration should promote meaningful activities for all

students because this is the usual process of helping the students, educate the

students and teach/help them how to choose a career.

Guidance Personnelhas a responsibility of helping students figure out

their career plans. The guidance personnel should attentively listen to the

student’s concern about choosing a career and provide support and assistance

Parents should be consistent and willing to accept the decision of their

children about their chosen career, they should always be the one to give

support for their children and give them love and guidance.

Students should need someone to encourage them and understand one’s

situation for this will surely contribute a big factor to help them achieve their

goals. We must always seek guidance to our parents and should our self in

making a wrong decision because it will contribute negative effect to us.

Future researchers, should continue to study and have more research to

contribute more knowledge and information in choosing a career path and find

ways to continue and achieve their goal.
