Communication and Media

- Media can bridge effective communication.


- Media acts as a channel of information dissemination.
- Creative delivery of information is possible through media.

Roles of media

- It exposes corrupt politicians.


- It paves way to various advocacies.
- It facilitates democratic processes and guarantees fair elections.

Media and Information Literacy - It empowers every individual with the use of media through
developing critical thinking and life long learning skills.

Media and communication - Media alters receiver’s message making it difficult to have effective
message.

Media - these are radio, television, newspaper, magazines and social media

Traditional Media - a mean of mass communication with the purpose to inform

Ethnographic Films - A non-fiction work that reflects the lives of indigenous people typically
following the documentary format

Brochure - used as a form of advertisement or promotion

Magazine - A periodical publication containing articles and illustrations, typically covering a


particular subject or area of interest.

Books - A long-written work intended to inform like reference books or entertain such as novels

LCD projectors - used during the electronic age

Pre-industrial age – when Telegraph flourished. People discovered fire and developed paper
from plants

Examples of digital citizenship:

- Digital Security
- Digital Law
- Digital Access

The purpose of being information and media literate

- To communicate and think critically


- To engage in a digital society
- That one needs to be able to understand

Types of media:

- Print media – books, newspapers, magazines, brochures


- New media – blogs, mobile apps, social media, websites, streaming services
- Broadcast media – television, radio
- Film - movies

Types of Intellectual Property

- Copyright – examples are music, books, movies


- Patent – examples are inventions
- Trademark – examples are goods or services
- Industrial design – examples are ornamental of aesthetic aspect

Information Literacy - The ability to recognize when information is needed, and to locate,
evaluate, and effectively communicate information in its various formats.

Aristotle - uses One-way communication

Communication - It refers to the process of sharing and conveying messages or information


from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures.
