Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Jesus the Loving Shephered Christian College stated that the word of God is the best

foundation of all the learning. A transformed and empowered graduates equipped with world

class skills and attitudes who are God-fearing, responsible, nationalistic, and committed to serve

as major facilitators for global development is the Shephered’s mission.

One of the biggest challenges encountered by teachers today is the student’s classroom

behavior TeacherVision Staff (2020). A disruptive behavior creates a classroom environment

that is not conducive to learning. Promoting positive behavior is the key in nipping behavioral

problems before problem could arise. A good foundation is one way to foster a positive

classroom behavior. Morin (2023) stated that in managing a challenging student behavior, a

teacher must use positive behavior strategies.

Instructors should pertain from commenting negatively to the students, rather they

should offer nonjudgmental feedback on students’ work and be constructive in criticism to

nurture a motivated student (Yarborough and Fedesco 2020). When the classroom environment

provides enough support for the satisfaction of autonomy, the student may experience self-

determined forms of motivation. Students tends to act and persists in educational settings when

influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Last 2019, Representative Bienvenido Abante Jr., Minority Floor Leader of the House

of Representatives, seeks to make Bible reading mandatory in all elementary and secondary

public schools and filed has filed House Bill No. 2069. He argues that there would be no much

problems on leadership, governance and peace and order if Biblicak discipline, principles, and

1
standards are taught and inculcalated in the minds of our children.

It was reported and published by De Vera and Noriega (2019) in MANILA

BULLLETIN that DepEd says mandatory bible reading may 'trigger a lot of passionate debates.

The appointed Education Secretary Leonor Briones mentioned that “We have to think very, very

carefully about making it mandatory for public schools because you have the separation of

Church and State to consider and that’s Constitutional,”.

PROJECT F.P.C.B (Fostering a Positive Classroom Behavior) is a program that would

benefit not just the students but also the teachers since it will promote a healthy student-teacher

relationship. One of the interventions that will be conducted in cultivating a God-fearing student

is to start and end classes with a sincere prayer to Almighty God. The researchers would also

conduct Bible study during free time but would not be compulsory in respect to the student’s

own set of belief. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of utilizing PROJECT F.P.C.B

through cultivating a God-fearing and motivated student.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Generally, the main purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of utilizing

PROJECT F.P.C.B (Fostering a Positive Classroom Behavior) among Grade 10 students in

Salogon High School through cultivating a God-fearing and motivated student.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the proposed interventions in cultivating a God-fearing and motivated

students?

2. What is the level of effectiveness of the proposed interventions in cultivating a God-

fearing and motivated students to foster a positive classroom behavior?

2
1.3 Statement of Hypothesis

This study is supported by the following null and alternative hypothesis:

Null ( H 0 ¿: There is no significant effect in fostering a positive classroom behaviour

among Grade 10 students in Salogon High School after cultivating a God-fearing and motivated

student.

Alternative ( H 1 ¿: There is a significant effect in fostering a positive classroom

behaviour among Grade 10 students in Salogon High School after cultivating a God-fearing and

motivated student.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The following would benefit from this study:

Researchers. This will be beneficial to the researchers because at the end of this study,

they will be able to determine the effectiveness of utilizing Project F.P.C.B (Fostering a Positive

Classroom behavior). The researcher will know level of effectiveness of the proposed

interventions in cultivating a God-fearing and motivated students to foster a positive classroom

behavior.

Families. The main reason why parents / families sent their children to school is to gain

knowledge and have that degree to have a better future. “Education is the key to success”, they

say. Student can also acquire positive behavior from school that they can adapt when they went

to their homes and interact with their families. Positive school behavior can also foster a positive

relationship with families.

Shepherdville College. The result of this study will serve as a future reference in

Shepherdville College in other research related to Positive Classroom Behavior and God-fearing

3
and motivated students.

Students. The Grade 10 students in Salogon High School will be motivated in studying

and become even more God-fearing than before.

Practicum Teachers. This will serve as a guide on other practicum teachers during their

teaching practicum in a specific type of classroom (Elementary or High School). They can use

the proposed interventions in this study in cultivating a God-fearing and motivated student since

they will take the responsibilities of a professional teacher as part of their training as a student

teacher.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as an instrument in finding related study as

well as reliable information that would benefit future researchers.

1.5 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will focus only on the effectiveness of cultivating a God-fearing and

motivated student in implementing Project F.P.C.B (Fostering a positive Classroom Behavior)

among Grade 10 students in Salogon High School.

Specifically, this action research intended to know the proposed interventions in

cultivating a God-fearing and motivated student. Also, the researchers aim to determine the level

of effectiveness of the proposed interventions in cultivating a God-fearing and motivated

students to foster a positive classroom behavior.

1.6 Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted in Salogon High School, Salogon, San Jose, Camarines Sur.

The researchers chose Salogon High School as the locale of their study since they will be

4
assigned here as practicum teachers next semester 2023-2024 as part of their education

curriculum.

1.7 Definition of Terms

For better understanding to the terminologies used in this study, the following are

operationally defined:

God-fearing. In this study, the researcher aimed to cultivate a God-fearing student to

foster a positive classroom behavior. A student who is God-fearing tries to live morally good and

follow God’s will. A person who fears God is also afraid to commit a sin such as cheating in an

exam, creating trouble inside the classroom, bullying, skipping classes, disrespecting their

classmates especially their teachers, and gossiping.

Interventions. This refers to the strategies and techniques that the researchers will

conduct to cultivate a God-fearing and motivated student.

Motivated Students. Positive classroom behavior is started and sustained by motivated

students. In this study, motivated students refer to the outcome of the interventions done by the

researchers. Motivated students are most likely the ones who will do better in class and be

successful in life. They are influenced by motivated teachers.

Positive Classroom Behavior. This refers to the good characters that the students exhibit

inside the classroom. Positive classroom behavior increased academic achievement and

engagement in learning.

Practicum Teachers. In this study, practicum teachers refer to the researchers of this

paper. Practicum is a mandatory part of initial trainings of aspiring Secondary Education

teachers. The practicum researchers were assigned to observed and teach learners in Salogon

5
High School. The researchers are currently taking Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in

Values Education.

Project F.P.C.B. This program Project F.P.C.B (Fostering a Positive Classroom Behavior)

will be utilized among the Grade 10 learners in Salogon High School. The effectiveness of

Project F.P.C.B will be determined by conducting an experimental procedure through cultivating

a God-fearing and motivated student.
