PROJECT OBJECTIVES
One of the course outcomes of this subject, Machine Shop Theory and Practice,
is to create a project that utilizes the use of machine processes such as drilling,
grinding, welding, threading, and tapping. This project is to create a C-clamp by using
round bars that is essential for mechanical works. The materials to be used are scraps
that can be found from the school to promote reuse and recycling.

MATERIALS:
o 30”, 20 mm plain round bar (Whole frame)
o 7”, 16 mm plain round bar (moving screw)
o M14 x 1.5 mm nut
o 25.4 mm x 12.7 mm (1” x 1/2”) Flat Bar
o Welding rod
o Grinding wheel
o 5/8 Drill bit

EQUIPMENT:
o Drill Press / Portable Drill
o Grinder
o Welding Machine
o Hand Tap
o Tap and Die

PROCESSES INVOLVED:
o Cutting
o Drilling
o Tapping
o Threading
o Grinding
o Welding
TIME CHART / SESSIONS:

FIRST SESSION  Prepare all the materials needed.

(3 hours)  Measure and cut the round bars to their specific
measurements.
SECOND SESSION  Start by bending the round bar that will serve as the
(3 hours) main frame of the clamp.
 Smoothen the round bar first by grinding to remove any
accumulated rust.
 Drill a hole through the other end of the main rebar
frame that will serve as the starting point for creating
internal threads by hand tapping.
THIRD SESSION  Using tap and die, create external threads on the steel
(3 hours) rod for the clamping device.
 Drill a hole at the end of the rod for the handle to go
through.
FOURTH SESSION  Grind the two flat bars thoroughly and then weld them
(3 hours) together which will serve as the fixed jaw of the clamp.
Wait for it to cool before welding it to the other end of
the frame.
 Cut a portion of an angle bar and grind it to form a circle
for the lock of the adjusting screw.
FIFTH SESSION  Prepare the other plain round bars to be ground.
(3 hours)  After grinding, weld the round bars by following what’s in
the project plan.
 Insert the nut at the top of the adjusting screw.
SIXTH SESSION  Grind another steel rebar for its handle and bend it to
(3 hours) have a 90° angle.
 Insert the handle into the hole at the end of the movable
rod and weld it in place.
SEVENTH SESSION  Assemble the rod and the clamp frame. Weld the circle
(3 hours) portion of the angle bar that was ground in the previous
session and weld it on top of the nut.
 Smoothen it for a better appearance.
EIGHT SESSION  Check if there are defects that need necessary
(3 hours) improvements.
 If there are not, start with the finishing and pass it to the
subject instructor.
Total working hours:
24 hours
