Reversible or opposing reaction
Catalysis
⧫A catalyst:-is a substance which alters the rate of
reaction, but it cannot initiate a reaction.
⧫A catalyst is unchanged at the end of reaction
⧫A very small amount of catalyst will bring about
the reaction of indefinite amounts of the reactants
⧫Finally, a catalyst cannot alter the equilibrium
position of a reversible reaction, since; it cannot
alter the energy content of the system.
Classification of catalysts
o Homogenous catalysts
Is one which is present in the same phase as the reactants.
For example, water vapor catalysis many reactions,
hydrogen and chlorine will not react if they are first carefully
dried.
o Heterogeneous catalysts
Is one which is present in a different phase from the
reactants
For example:-
Finely divided nickel (rainy nickel) will catalyzed
the hydrogenation of multiple bonds, especially
c=c, in organic chemistry. This process is used for
the hardening of vegetable oils to make margarine.
Finely divided iron mixed with alumina to prevent
the ion particles from sintering together, is used as
the catalyst in the Haber process:
Catalyst Poisons
The adsorption theory throws some light on the
phenomenon known as the (poisoning) of catalysts in
the contact process.
Arsenical impurities have carefully removed from the
sulfur dioxide, as they cause very rapid loss of activity
in the platinum catalyst.
Here, C represents the catalyst
S the substrate
X is the intermediate complex
Y some substance which is formed in addition to it
W is a molecule which reacts with the complex
to give the product or products P with elimination of a
molecule Z.
