SAFE WORK PROCEDURE – TILING WORKS

PURPOSE

This is to eliminate hazards arising from tiling work activities.

SCOPE

This procedure is applicable to Yuanju Construction Pte Ltdat All Projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Site-in-Charge
- Overall in-charge. Ensure that work is carried out as planned, and according to the relevant
standards, risk assessments, and safe work procedures.

WSH Supervisor / Co-ord / WSHO


- Ensure that legal requirement, relevant standards as well as risk assessments and safe
work procedure are complied with.

Line Supervisor / Foreman


- Ensure that work activities are being carried out in according to this safe working procedure
as well as legal requirement, relevant standards and risk assessments.

Employee / Workers
- Equip with necessary personal protective equipments. Work safely according to line
supervisor / foreman’s instructions. Attend scheduled trainings (including tool box briefing).

HAZARDS

1. Falling from height


2. Struck by falling object during hoisting
3. Slip, trip and fall
4. Step on, strike against or by objects
5. Cut by sharp objects
6. Overloading of formwork or work platform
7. Chemical hazard: Skin contact with cement / chemical, splashing of wet cement / chemical
/ dust into eye, breathing in cement dust
8. Waste water discharge from washing water
9. Ergonomic due to poor work posture
10. Electric Shock / Electrocution
11. Fatigue / Medical & Physical Conditions

CONTROL MEASURES

1. When handling cement, worker shall:


a. Wear close fitting clothes, gloves, hard hats, safety goggles and suitable footwear;
b. Keep as much of the body covered as possible;
c. Take all practicable precautions to keep cement from the skin; and
d. Wash frequently.
2. When work is involves cement, lime and other dusty materials:
a. The premises shall be provided with adequate general and exhaust ventilation; and
b. Other precautions shall be taken to prevent the dispersal of dust.
3. Moving of pallet of tiles using crane shall be governed by signals given by qualified
signalman.
4. Cement shall be used as soon as possible after continuous mixing.
5. Material Data Sheet shall be kept for emergency case.
6. To comply with SWP on lifting operation if using crane, and SWP on working on height.
7. Where flying particle is likely or dust is generated, the use of safety glasses with side shield
protection is recommended.
8. Provision of effective safety guard for cutting machines / equipments.
9. All cable joints shall be mechanically and electrically sound, fully insulated and inaccessible
to workman.
10. Always check for defective cables, plugs or sockets.

Usage of Fall Protection Devices

1. All workers working at a height of more than 2m must put on safety belts / harness.
2. Safety belts / harness must be secured to effective anchorage points.
3. Lifelines shall be provided where there are no effective anchorage points for safety belts /
harness.
4. All openings whereby a person is liable to fall more than 2m, effective barricades must be
provided with at least 2 guard rails with a rail at 1.1m and a mid rail.
5. Floor openings wide enough for a person to fall through must be securely planked or
boarded.
6. All working platform to be free from debris, obstruction, and tripping hazards.
7. All damaged platforms / guardrails / barricades are to be removed or discarded out of the
worksite to prevent any re-use.
8. Sufficient lighting shall be provided at working platforms, etc during night work.

Fatigue, Medical & Physical Conditions

1. Prolong standing, Improper manual lifting & Bad posture causing Musculoskeletal
disorders (MSD)
a. Ensure no long hour standing without having break.
b. Provide resting area for worker to rest.
c. To rotate worker to perform work, if necessary,
d. Provide close supervision during work.
e. Worker shall not carry more than 20kg load.
2. Medical Conditions E.g. high blood, diabetes
a. HR to monitor and remind employee to do regular medical check-up.
b. To deploy the employee to do non-strenuous physical works.
c. To deploy the employee to do low injury works e.g. traffic control, cleaning work
etc.
d. Supervisor to check and remind employee to take medicine.
3. Physical condition
a. HR to monitor and remind employee to do regular medical check-up.
b. To deploy the employee to do cleaning or manage storeroom.
c. Supervisor to check and monitor the employee physical condition.

TRAINING

Only individuals with the appropriate experience, skills, and training will be authorized to
perform the work activities. The trainings include the following:

External Training by ATO

1. Construction Safety Course for Project Managers / WSQ Manage Workplace Safety and
Health in Construction Sites – for managerial staff
2. Building Construction Supervisor Safety Course / WSQ Supervise Construction Work for
WSH / WSQ Workplace Safety and Health Management in Construction Industry – for all
supervisors and foremen
3. Safety Coordinator Course / Advanced Certificate in Workplace Safety and Health – for
safety personnel
4. WSQ Apply Workplace Safety and Health in Construction Sites

In-House Training

1. Risk assessment (RA) and safe work procedure (SWP) training


2. Tool box meeting
3. Usage of fall protection devices training
